Food Pyramid Replaced by Plate
Quote:
The food pyramid has been dismantled in favor of a simple plate icon that urges Americans to eat a more plant-based diet.
One half of your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables, with whole grains and lean protein on the other half, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Low-fat dairy on the side, such as a cup of skim milk or yogurt, is also suggested.
The new icon, MyPlate is designed to remind Americans to adopt healthier eating habits, in a time when more than one-third of children and more than two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight or obese.
"It's an opportunity for Americans to understand quickly how to have a balanced and nutritious meal," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "It's a constant reminder as you look at your own plate whether your portion sizes are right, whether you've got enough fruits and vegetables on that plate."

change for the sake of change. what a waste of time, and probably resources.
does anybody over the age of 18 really need to hear this info on how to eat healthier? if so, i feel sorry for them.
"you mean to tell me i shouldn't eat pizza and fried chicken for every meal washed down with a 12 pack of coors? well i'll be."
Re: Food Pyramid Replaced by Plate
This actually makes a hell of a lot more sense than the pyramid. The next step will be convincing Americans that the size of their plates shouldn't be the size of a hubcap...

Only 1 pyramid I live by.

again, why should we be listening to them in the first place though?? i for one am going to eat whatever the hell i want to eat, when i want to eat it. i realize that all the beer i drink and fried chicken, pizza, etc isn't good for me. i also realize that i like having those things more then i like the idea of eating rice cakes and baked potatos, and possibly living another few years.
i could get hit by a car today, die in a plane crash tomorrow, or get shot by a guy robbing a liquor store next week. i'm willing to run the risk of being unhealty so that i can actually enjoy the time that i do have here.
and on a side note, the stuff our grandparents ate wasn't all that healthy either, and most i know lived long lives. they cooked with lard for gods sake. they just worked their ***** off when they were done eating lunch and were better for it.
to each their own, but i'm not going to buy into a food pyramid, or plate for that matter.

Exactly. I think this plate should be just like this but each part should be smaller and have more of the plate showing to emphasize portion size.
It's crazy that you have to search for plates that will actually fit in a cupboard!

Yes, They put $2 million into this gigantic waste of time. As if the light bulb will finally go off over peoples head when they see the plate instead of the ARBY's logo.

I understand your point, but to say our elders didn't eat healthy I don't believe is entirely true. Sure, they mixed lard in their food and probably ate homemade dessert for every meal, but their every day foods and snacks weren't jammed packed with refined sugar, corn syrup, and other preservatives. Also, I think they inherently lived a more active lifestyle. The portion sizes we are used to have gotten out of control with each passing generation. Most scoff at the idea of a 3 oz serving of meat.
Re: Food Pyramid Replaced by Plate
I like it and actually structure my diet around this on a daily basis.
Eating "whatever the hell I want" is your right, but will catch up with you sooner or later.

It is fine that you eat anyway that you want to, its America, God bless it. But, please get a job that offers you insurance so I don't have to pay for your medical bills. Some people don't eat healthy because they do not know what healthy eating is. We're pounded day in and day out to eat fast food and some people don't know any better. Education about healthy eating and being fit is a good thing.
As for our grandparents....yes they probably didn't eat things that were healthier, but they also didn't eat 6 servings in one sitting, which seems to be the norm in America anymore.

Agree...this should have been the first design years ago!
Re: Food Pyramid Replaced by Plate
Not simple enough. I need a clear system of color-coded shapes (nothing complex like rectangles and circles) that will tell me what I need to eat each day.
