Attn: Verizon Customers
If you do not have a smart phone and are considering going to one do it NOW! Verizon is going to tiered data on July 7th so it will no longer be 29.99 for unlimited. It will now be $20 for 2 gb, $50 for 5 gb, and $80 for 10 gb.
Any person who already has a smartphone will already be grandfathered in and has nothing to worry about it. It is associated with your number so even if you switch to a different phone you will still be unlimited.

My wife does not have a data plan currently but I do. Will she have to on the tiered plan if she decides she wants a Smartphone?

I thought whenever you upgraded on a renewal you'd get brought over to the new tiers.
Those tiers are waaay too low though, especially getting into 4g. Most arent using those levels now, but when you start using the phones for netflix, hulu, etc, you can rack up the data very quickly. $80 for 10gb is a flat out joke.

Re: Attn: Verizon Customers
So if I am eligible for a new smart phone in 3 months, do I have to get a new plan with my new phone?

She won't be tiered if she does it before the 7th

If you get your phone 3rd party, or pay full price you can keep your old contract. But if you take their discount on a new phone they will require you to sign a new one. Likely with a tier plan

Re: Attn: Verizon Customers
Are current customers always grandfathered in or will they eventually have to start paying these prices?

If you already have a smartphone and go to a different smartphone, you will still be unlimited so no worries

Re: Attn: Verizon Customers
I'm eyeing getting a smart phone but the $30 a month extra had me worried. I doubt I'll ever watch movies on it since I don't watch movies on my home computer even. I'll probably mostly use it to access the internet in much the same way I do now on my current phone, phone numbers, businesses, weather and occasionally to check scores. The main reason I want it is for better email service and so I can look at attachments since I'm always on the go and email is the best way to keep in touch with my main office. Also better maps.
I currently have 15mb plan for $10 a month and it is unusual for me to get even close to that so 2gb for $20 seems like a good deal to me, but I don't know, does the typical smart phone takes to run compared to my normal flip phone? In other words would it take a lot more for me to look at the weather on a smartphone than it will on my phone?

The way it was explained to our store is that even if you get a new contract,as long as you had a smartphone before, you will be ok... it is associated with your number, not your contract

Re: Attn: Verizon Customers
CP44- Right now I have two phones on my plans. On verizon's website, it says I can upgrade at discounted price, as well as my other phone. But also on the other phones line, there is a text box that says if I wait until 8/13, i receive an additional discount. What is the difference between those two? If we both wanted to go i-Phones, I assume we should do it before the tiered plans come into effect. Would the cost of the two i-phones be different, due to the comment above?

I maybe use it once a week and so far I'm still not coming close to my mb. Maybe no one really knows the answer to my question. I'm just wondering how much more kb it takes to run the same operation on a droid then it does on my flip phone.
