Urban raccoons

Damn small raccoon was in my bird feeder making a racket tonight. Chased him off and five minutes later he was back. Looked for something to throw at him and there was a golf ball on my kitchen counter and gave that a good sling. Just missed him but it hit the bird feeder (big racket, probably alarmed the neighbors who’s house is only 15 feet from the feeder). A couple years ago I threw a baseball at one and it bounced off my deck and right into the neighbors siding where it left a big dent…oops!

Anyway, looking for any deterrent advice from the CF community. I did go out tonight and spray some Liquid Fence (stinky rabbit/deer repellant) on the birdfeeder pole. I shot one Rocky after I trapped him in a live trap a few years ago but than I had this big dead raccoon to get rid of. That one had taken up residence under my deck and he had to go. Thinking BB gun or maybe a good paintball gun to pester the current marauder. Thoughts/suggestions?

You can catch them in a live trap pretty easily, we always did it in Ames. I always took them out in the country and let them go afterwards, its just a simple trap where you catch them and they are sealed in it.

Mix fly bait pellets and mountain dew in the bottom of a milk jug. Take the milk jug and cut off 3/4 the way down first so that he can get to it. The coon will drink the treat, stumble 10 feet, and die.

I support this. No reason to kill it just because its in a bird feeder or making noise.

If you plan on releasing the bastard animal into the wild, drop him off at least 8-10 miles from your home, only after driving in circles. Growing up we had a raccoon that returned 3 times before my dad took this type of drastic, oppressive diplomacy and relocation to the next level. However, he did threaten to take military action if he ever saw it again. So either the raccoon never found his way back again, or my dad pulled some black-ops action on the critter.

I live in the country. If I catch you bringing any of these critters out to my area to release I swear I will bring them back to you times 10

Call Billy, though its a long drive from Louisiana to Iowa.

Probably cost $100 for professional removal. Not into the risk of catching and releasing wild animals myself.

Bird feeder today, in your garage the next.

my dads glock through the kitchen window, pointed at the catfood bowl ten feet away. This method netted me three raccoons and an oposum. You probably can't do that, though, as that was a farm. Word to the wise: make sure you stick the gun all the way out the window or you could have a ringing in your ears for a while.

Not taking a side, but by defination a "humanitarian" is helping people, not animals.

Yeah, I like to hunt, but killing an animal in a cage? No way. Definitely against the man-code. Plus, my Aunt used to raise baby raccoons and let them go when they were older, they are great pets, incredibly smart and friendly animals.

I know Ill get flack for it, but my rule is if you kill the animal, eat it. Otherwise youre just being an dick.

You live in the country and are apparently scared of raccoons? That's pretty weird. I've never seen a wooded area that didn't have plenty of coon and opossums.

Urban raccoons are a pest but I can't imagine why anyone would have an issue with wild ones in the country. Neat animals, and they are fun to hunt, though I don't think fur prices are very high anymore.
