We are thinking about getting a puppy from a local shelter. She is two months old, and hasn't had all of her vaccinations yet. I have a 14 y/o cat that lives here and I stopped getting her regular vaccinations about 3-4 years ago. She's a 100% indoor cat, and my dad (who is a vet) got tired of her going crazy on him and said it wasn't really that necessary if she's not going outside.
So, I'm wondering if we're putting either of them at risk by picking up this puppy today. I'm pretty sure that the cat will avoid the dog like the plague, so I don't think they will ever make contact, outside of the cat maybe swatting her on the nose. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I would check with my dad on this, but we have to decide by 5pm today if we want her and he's inaccessible til after then.
Shouldn't be a medical problem. I think you realize the potetial behavioral issue to putting a new dog and cat in the same house. There aren't a whole lot of diseases that can be transmitted from dog to cat.

How about having the puppy around a one year old baby? My girlfriend nannies a 1 y/o at the house part-time and I wonder if there would be any concerns there...

Most dogs will be fine (puppies would be more likely to hurt the kid by playing too rough rather than being aggressive), but it is it worth the risk?
At the very least I'd make sure the kid's parents were aware of and ok with the situation.
