Picked up Rocco this afternoon. We have played catch with a tennis ball and a soft rubber frisbee for an hour. Does this breed know to drop things instinctively or has he been trained? He would bring back anything that I threw and just drop it at my feet. The kennel had been feeding him a mixture of dry food and cheap canned food. I will be gradually changing him over to some dry and canned Canidae food that I purchased today.
Way cool! Can be either instinctual or trained. Could be either, or a combo thereof. Is a good sign of temperament though.
Probably would love to chase your daughter and the basketball around on the basketball court too!

Congratulations on adopting your dog. I did the same last year and its been alot of fun. Breed I got was a German Shorthaired Pointer....just a plug for that breed as a really good dog as well!
just ensure he is not a male springer spaniel. RAGE.
I've heard about this being a problem lately, but my family had an English Cocker/English Springer mix from the time I was 5 until I was 20. I've never met a dog with a better temperament.

Our family had a golden retriever/yellow lab mix growing up and she was awesome! She was very smart and loving. Couldn't have asked for a better dog. I have never heard of that brand of dog food. I have a rare breed bird dog. She is a German Longhaired Pointer, and I feed her Native, which I have been very impressed with. It is made by Kent Feeds and has had really good reviews thus far. Its mostly insinct to drop what he has retrieved.
You are doing the right thing by slowly switching him over to your preferred blend.
I'm looking for a Golden Retriever puppy.
