    Sadly, pleaded seems to be the preferred word among all of the news media of late. It's even become acceptible in dictionaries.

    Good thought, but when this story was first reported, it was stated that the cat died from the 7 story fall.

    The paper specifically said the cat was found deceased on the sidewalk below the man's apartment. He threw the cat out the window after he was done with it.
