Coke for me...from Indianapolis, Indiana. Pretty much everyone i knew growing up called it a coke as well

Re: Do you say soda, pop, or coke?
So, when you say you want a "coke", do you get asked what kind? Like, "I would like a Sprite coke today, my good man." Don't say "coke" unless you want a Coca-Cola. It's just dumb.

It's just dumb. I was wondering this as well. I've spent plenty of time visiting "coke" territories, but I don't know that I have ever heard anyone say this. Can someone fill me in? Do I actually walk into a restaurant and tell the waitress that I want a Mountain Dew coke?

No. Using the word coke is the same thing as if you say pop or soda. The word coke is just used instead.
Examples
COKE - "I'm gonna run to Kum and Go quick to get a coke, anybody else want something?"
POP - "I'm gonna run to Kum and Go quick to get a pop, anybody else want something?"
SODA - "I'm gonna run to Kum and Go quick to get a soda, anybody else want something?"

Even though I've always lived in Iowa, I've slowly but surely migrated from "pop" to "soda" over the years and I have no idea why. Maybe I've been around people who call it soda a lot and it was subconscious.

POP - "I'm gonna run to Kum and Go quick to get a pop, anybody else want something?"
SODA - "I'm gonna run to Kum and Go quick to get a soda, anybody else want something?" No no no It is "I am fixin' to go to the store and get a coke. Ya'll want sumpthin?'
Which is also the difference between a northern girl and a southern girl. A northern girl says yes you can and a southern girl says ya'll can.

It's just dumb. Years ago when my brother was in South America,(I think Argentina) they called everything Crush. Then they would ask you what kind of Crush you wanted and you would tell them Coca Cola.
They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there. -
