Re: Valley High School Recruiting????
Just because a kid goes to Catholic school for four years doesn't mean that he wasn't recruited, they just got to them early. You think High School coaches aren't aware of who the top 7th and 8th graders are? Or other players and parents? Most of the rectuiting is done by the kids and parents, often at the request of the coach... There were multiple area schools trying to get my brother to transfer and my ex-wife experienced the same thing in the Cedar Rapids area.

Exhibit A: Ballard girl's basketball players from Australia.

Catholic schools recruit 100% of their students 100% of the time. Again, you can't name a D1 recruit from a Catholic school who isn't Catholic. Are you intimating that Catholic schools are paying tuition for athletes?

Re: Valley High School Recruiting????
What a great thing to teach high school aged kids-- If things aren't going well in your current school just up and leave your coaches and teammates. That should serve the kid well in the real world.
And we wonder why so many college kids transfer anymore...

How often does being the top 7th or 8th Grader translate to being a D1 athlete?
I've could type up a countless list of letdowns there.
Like I said before, the real battle is turning the Catholic jr High kids into Catholic HS kids.
Public Schools in DSM do the same thing.
Oh, and all the guys I typed up grew up going to Catholic Jr Highs.

I'm stating that the vast majority of D1 recruits from Catholic schools are indeed Catholics so they have a pretty good reason to be at a Catholic school.
So...are Catholic schools paying athletes? Because by their nature as private schools, Catholic schools must recruit ALL of their students.

They certainly have great, non-catholic players. Regardless of how they got them, legit or not, you're foolish to think they aren't there.

I do know many Xavier students in Cedar Rapids that are not Catholic. And a few of them are the better athletes there...and were contacted specifically by the school's coaches.

Not saying there isn't one, I just can't think of any. Bingo, happens in Omaha A LOT. Open enrollment to Millard school district because of the perceived quality of education and athletics. Each Millard high school (West, South, North) currently are over 2000 students same as Valley and are regularly dominant in sports, the 2010 Class A football title was between South and West which are about 2 miles from each other.
My wife and I recently moved to Elkhorn in NE partially because of the school districts overall strength compared to Omaha public schools. They also have traditionally had excellent sports teams in class B in NE (analagous to 3A in IA), so I guess they sure did a hell of a job recruiting us to the area.
I guess I'm in the who the hell cares crowd. I may be off base here, but isn't it totally legal for a private school to invite whoever the hell they want to go there for whatever they deem an appropriate tuition rate? No taxpayer/gov't involvement = Invite who they want.

Kids open enroll to Valley...no big deal. has so much truth it's not funny....I've even have seen recruiting by rival schools on facebook where the coach asks a recruit if he wants to come play for playing time and it's a sincere conversation...next thing you see him opposite the court from you.
Also witnessed a case where a guy played basketball and after it's over transferred to Urbandale to finish academics...pretty fishy
If you don't think they recruit you must be living in a cave...it happens from 1A to 4A and it's killing high school sports here...especially for kids from small towns that don't have the benefit of having a Des Moines or Council Bluffs right by it.
