You know it's horse meat when the fat is yellow.

Re: Horse Slaugter could Soon Begin Again in U.S.
Just as long as they are only using old horses... at that point, you might as well find a use for the meat.
But I sure hope people aren't actually planning on raising them just to slaughter. Horses are great, intelligent, proud animals, as anyone who has ridden one can attest. They definitely deserve better. To me it would be like eating a dog or a cat.

Horses are not intelligent.
Pigs are intelligent (more intelligent than dogs) but we eat them anyways.

Re: Horse Slaugter could Soon Begin Again in U.S.
Horse slaughter needs to be brought back to the U.S. It is pathetic watching the jam-packed trailers taking all these millions of horses quite literally across country just so they can be taken to a third world country (like Mexico or Canada - joking!) to be killed and brought back here as by-product.
It is so inefficient you would think the existing plan was devised by the Big Ten.

1.) Unwanted, poor quality horses become a burden, and are often subjected to a life of poor treatment.
2.) In the economic decline, many horse owners can no longer afford to keep their horses. They can't sell them, and they are many times neglected and starve.
3.) this has caused shelters to overflow, and have to turn horses away.
4.) Without a slaughter market to form a base price, good quality horses are being sold for ridiculously low prices. Often times, you can't give them away - they're worth nothing.
I don't like the idea of horse slaughter, but it's pretty clear that it's a necessary evil. IMO, it's better to slaughter than subject the animal to a poor, abusive life.

Man that is awesome. I hope this catches on in the u.s. I ate horse and donkey in Italy and it tasted really good! It will probably be too expensive anyways.

Can't forget Dennis and Mac at the party boat with Patrick Swayze's brother. Overall great episode!

Re: Horse Slaugter could Soon Begin Again in U.S.
I am a horse owner....long over due. Not all horses are usefull regardless of age. like dogs or anything...some are good...some are duds...some get injured and are useless.
meat is typically sold for pet food...or eaten in France.
currently shipped to canada and mexico. Horse market has crashed, hay expensive, too many horses...lot of them are starving as a result. humane thing is to have a place to dispose of just like an unwanted cat or dog.
another example of hollywood confusing horses with wild horses....never should have been banned to start with. I think the last one that closed was in IL.
not economical to raise horses for meat...but it serves as a place for useless unwanted horses to be disposed of.

The ban was a horrible idea that needed changed back. IIRC almost all the horse meat for human consumption was exported.

Re: Horse Slaugter could Soon Begin Again in U.S.
Not sure why anyone would want to eat horse meat, but the slaughter of horses is more humane than letting horses starving to death when people can't afford to find a way to get rid of them.
