I stopped trying to surprise her with good gifts, turns out I'm not very good at picking stuff out. Now I just ask her and then go buy it.

I got my Ex tickets to the bowl game in New York in return I got a panoramic picture of jack trice stadium framed with pictures of our friends, it is awesome I will keep it forever.

Best idea I had was a 12 Days of Christmas theme, where I started on the 12th day before Christmas with an insignificant gift and built up to the best item on Christmas Day. Sure, picking out 12 items is a pain, but it gives you plenty of room for error along the way since you get a do-over the very next day. I think I got extra credit for creativity and originality, so there's that.

Bought her a diamond ring one year. Few years later I booked a trip to Disney for a Christmas gift. Pretty sure she liked that more.

My wife is a huge Cubs fan. Got her an autographed Billy Williams baseball bat and display case. She still talks about it.

When we were broke college students, the best gift I got him was one of those fleece blankets that you sew/tie together. Chicago Bears material, and extra long. He's tall and always complained about blankets never covering his feet. He still uses it all the time. The best gift he got me in college was taking me shopping for engagement rings.

Post-graduation his best gift was last year when he told me we were going to Talladega. This year I was going to get him tickets to a Blackhawk game but that is obviously not happening.

So hopefully he won't read this and know what I've got planned for next year.

Is she in the JTS picture? If so, I would see if you can photoshop a drunk guy or a tree in her place. Seems like having a picture of your ex hanging up would be weird.

the best presents i have received from a significant other were pretty small but thoughtful. each time the gf picked up on hints i didn't even know i was giving.

mid summer one year i was reminiscing about how much i enjoyed homemade ice cream the one time in life i had it. that year, got an ice cream maker. had completely forgotten i had that conversation.

another gf made me a pom-pon for my favorite stocking cap. I am 30 and have had this cap as long as i can remember. was telling her how much i hated the fact my older brother removed the massive pom-pon from the top and wished it still had one. she got online, figured out how to make one, and did. $2 and some effort and i will remember it forever.

best advice. listen. women have a way of subtly dropping hints throughout the year of things they like/want/are interested in. my problem as a man is listening beyond a basic level to decipher what they really mean.
