I don't think DBT will ever put out another album as good as Dirty South or Decoration Day, but I've loved a couple of individual tracks since Isbell. Fourth Night of my Drinking, Birthday Boy, Used to be a Cop are all real good. Pulaski too.

The Coup - Underdogs
'Cross town, the situation is identical
Somebody getting strangled by the system and its tentacles
...
You take the workers from jobs, you gon' have murders and mobs
A gang of preachers screaming sermons over murmors and sobs
Saying, "Pray for a change from the Lord above you"
They'd tear this mother****** up if they really loved you.
it's a nine mile walk
from the office to the pumps
sometimes you think you're gonna drop
in the end you're filthy dirty
horny and ****** off
and before you can leave u gotta sweep the ****in' shop
it's a real real *****
to be workin' 4 the man
but **** i do it well so what the ****
i could probly wash dishes
at some other ****in' dump
but it's all the same to me
bustin' *** 2 make a buck
so read 'em up + stick 'em
pump that ****** good
some woman down on main st. needs a jump
get your fingers outta your ***
and pump some ******'s gas
and think about how bad new hope sucks
it's a **** poor life
when the ladies fire u up
and then u check their oil and know you're ****ed
'cuz no one wants a loser
who works for 5 an hour
smells like gas, looks like ****
works in the rain - rude as hell
i can fix a tire like hurricane melinda
i know that i'm the best for what it's worth
so if i choose to help you
don't look like you expect it
'cuz it's a gift that god gave me at birth
so read 'em up + stick 'em
pump that ****** good
some woman down on main st. needs a jump
get your fingers outta your ***
and pump some ******'s gas
and think about how bad new hope sucks
Here Comes a Regular -- The Replacements
Well, a person can work up a mean mean thirst
After a hard day of nothin' much at all
Summer's past, it's too late to cut the grass
There ain't much to rake anyway in the fall
Sometimes I just ain't in the mood
To take my place in back with the loudmouths
You're like a picture on a fridge that's never stocked with food,
I used to live at home, now I stay at the house
And everybody wants to be special here
They call your name out loud and clear
Here comes a regular, call out your name
Here comes a regular, Am I the only one here today
Well a drinking buddy that's bound to another town
Once the police made you go away
And even if you're in the arms of someone's baby now
I drink a great big whiskey to you anyway
And everybody wants to be someone's here
Someone's gonna show up never fear
Here comes a regular, call out your name
Here comes a regular, Am I the only one who feels ashamed
And even alongside old sad eyes, who says
"Opportunity knocks once then the door slams shut"
All I know is that I'm sick of everything that my money can buy
A fool who wastes his life god rests his guts
First the lights, and the collar goes up,and the wind begins to blow
You turn our back on a pay-you-back last call
First the plants, the leaves, the grass and here comes the snow
There ain't much to rake here anyway in the fall
Where'd you get the cowboy on your arm? Where ya want me to drop him off?
My favorites?
I used to open my radio show on KPGY (ISU's station in the 70's) with the song Karn Evil 9 by ELP. How could it get better than...
"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend come inside, come inside."
Of course John Lennon's Imagine...
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us and the world will be as one."
"Ten Years Gone"
Then as it was, then again it will be
An' though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Blind stars of fortune, each have several rays
On the wings of maybe, down in birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
But as the eagle leaves the nest, it's got so far to go
Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me
In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be
Did you ever really need somebody, And really need 'em bad
Did you ever really want somebody, The best love you ever had
Do you ever remember me, baby, did it feel so good
'Cause it was just the first time, And you knew you would
Through the eyes an' I sparkle, Senses growing keen
Taste your love along the way, See your feathers preen
Kind of makes makes me feel sometimes, Didn't have to grow
We are eagles of one nest, The nest is in our soul
Vixen in my dreams, with great surprise to me
Never thought I'd see your face the way it used to be
Oh darlin', oh darlin'
I'm never gonna leave you. I never gonna leave
Holdin' on, ten years gone
Ten years gone, holdin' on, ten years gone
Somebody to Love - Queen
Can.. (Anybody find me Somebody to Love?)
Each morning I get up, I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
(Take a look at yourself)
Take a look in the mirror and cry
(in the mirror and cry)
Lord what you're doing to me (yeah - yeah)
I have spent all my years in believing you
(ooh, ooh believing you)
But I just can't get no relief, Lord!
(I just can't get no relief, Lord!)
Somebody, (somebody), ooh somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me -
(anybody find me)
Somebody to Love?
Yeah..
I work (he works hard) every day of my life
I work till I ache my bones
At the end (At the end of the day)
I take home
my hard earned pay all on my own
(goes home, goes home on his own)
I go down (down) on my knees (knees)
And I start to pray (praise the Lord!)
Till the tears run down from my eyes, Lord!
(ooh, ooh, ooh Lord!)
Somebody (somebody), ooh somebody! (please)
Can anybody find me -
(Can anybody find me)
Somebody to Love?
(He works hard)
Everyday (everyday)
And I try and I try and I try
(I try and I try and I try)
But everybody wants to put me down
(ooooooh)
They say I'm goin' crazy
(ooooooh)
They say I got a lot of water in my brain
(aaaaah)
I got no common sense
I got nobody left to believe
(He's got nobody left to believe)
(Yeah yeah yeah yeah)
(Ooh, Lord)
Oh Somebody, ooh (somebody)
Anybody find me
(Anybody find me)
Somebody to Love?
(Can, anybody, find me, Someone to Love?)
Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat (you just keep losing and losing)
I'm ok, I'm alright (he's alright, he's alright)
I ain't gonna face no defeat (yeah, yeah)
I just gotta get out of this prison cell
(ooh, ooh, this prison cell)
Some day I'm gonna be free, Lord!
(One day I'm gonna be free, Lord!)
Find me Somebody to Love...

"Barefoot girl sittin' on a hood of a Dodge drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain. Rat pulls into town, rolls up his pants. Together they take a stab at romance and disappear down Flamingo Lane." Jungleland-Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
"Hello Howard. How ya doin' my friend. My next door neighbor. Oh, yeah. Get your f-ing jumbo jet out of my airport!" Ain't No Fun Waitin' Around to be a Millionaire- AC/DC
I think each album they've put out since Isbell left has gotten progressively better.
Brighter Than Creation's Dark is probably my least favorite of all DBT records (and its' still solid), but I prefer The Big To Do to it, and Go-Go Boots to that.
Decoration Day is the gold standard, and will never be matched, but the last couple albums are at worst, on par to the pre-Isbell stuff.
