Neither is walking down flights of stairs 10 times a day w/ a dog in an apartment. neither is being young and wanting to go places and do things but you cant because you have a puppy. Neither is your pos dog that barks all night in an apartment. Who gets it when you break up? Thats right she does. Youll never see it again. She left you because she has a puppy that loves her more than you ever can. The end is near sir. Youre young, wait and get a puppy when all else has failed you in your life and relationship.
Sidenote, whats w/ girls and dogs these days. Every freaking girl that I date has a damn dog. No I dont want you to come over if you have to bring your ugly mut over too. So nobody loves you so you get a dog that is practically forced to love you so you feel better about yourself. I get it you hate your dad. move on. This all makes sense except for one point: If you were actually dating women, how would you end up on the Internet?

Re: Getting a Puppy
I would get a pet rock. Don't have to deal with feeding, cleaning, and spending time with it. The perfect pet

Re: Getting a Puppy
BAD IDEA...I got a dog once with a GF and was the worst thing I ever did. We broke up...she didn't want it and I couldn't take care of it the way it deserved. Had to bring it to a shelter. Felt awful.

Re: Getting a Puppy
I completely agree with 2020cy, as I have 2 dogs and they are damn near the same as having kids. They are also expensive. Remember you are going to have vet visits, food and puppy daycare or kennel costs if you leave town and they need to be kenneled. Just make sure you guys think things over properly and make sure you are ready for a commitment of this stature. If you do decide to follow through and get one, good luck and have fun. They will love you like no other one can.

Re: Getting a Puppy
I'm gonna have to disagree with you guys. I got a dog with my girlfriend a few years ago. I was very hesitant, I had a dog growing up and knew about the time, cost and effort needed. I wasn't going to get one until after college, but my girlfriend took me to go meet the dog, if we didn't take it, it would go to a shelter. I fell in love with the dog that day.
It's tough to train a puppy. Can get overwhelming at times. It's difficult to find a place to live, and difficult to travel. But in the end, getting the dog is probably the best decision I've made. I love coming home after a long day and having the dog great me at the door. My girlfriend and my dog make my place feel like a home.

also where are some good places in des moines or ames to get a dog? There have been a lot of negative nancies in this thread....and I will be the most negative. Don't do it. First off, do you have time to properly train and know how to train a dog? The type of dog you want will be small, therefore yappy and stupid. There is nothing worse than an owner that allows dogs to act like that, believe me, I live next to a couple of dogs I'd like to pull an Old Yeller on just because their moron owners never trained them. Do you have time to exercise a puppy? What about to take them outside often until they are toilet trained? Puppies are a hell of a lot of work, almost as much as babies.
My suggestion to you is to not get a dog at all, but if you do, go to either the Nevada or Ames animal shelter, and get a dog that has some training under its belt and doesn't need constant attention like a puppy.
However, if you are deadset on getting your yappy yorkiepoo, enroll yourself in obedience training at petsmart or something similar. Also invest in a bark collar, your neighbors will love you for it.

Also, to the OP, don't do it. You are already a poor college kid and adding expenses is a stupid idea.

Re: Getting a Puppy
I really don't see anything good coming from this. If you guys are serious, you'll have your life together after college for this. You've got enough to do and probably not a lot of money right now.
We'd love to have a dog, too. We're waiting until this grad school thing is over.

Re: Getting a Puppy
Like others have said, I'd wait until after college.

Re: Getting a Puppy
My girlfriend wanted a cat (so she ended up bringing two home) and even they are expensive. One gets urinary tract infections all the time, so that gets costly. I'm more of a dog person myself, but dogs are more expensive and cost more to feed (and are more work in general).
NEVER LET YOUR GIRLFRIEND CONVINCE YOU TO GET A DOG/CAT!
