Re: Mystery Iowa Lottery ticket... any guesses on what the real story is?
The ticket itself is legit - however - one of the key issues is that when the ticket was signed the trust was misspelled as "Hexam" instead of "Hexham" - so that raised flags right away on the legitimacy of who really won and if that trust even existed prior to the drawing - which would be very simple to determine.
Plus - I could have sworn I heard a lotto group came forward and was saying that the ticket had been stolen. I'm sure that happens all the time, but haven't heard anything about that.
In addition - I haven't seen a fraction of local coverage on this - but had not heard about the misspelling until I saw it on Yahoo! News today. $16.5 Million Lotto Winner Claim at Last Minute - Yahoo!
Finally, kind of makes ya wonder if it someone in a nasty divorce and one of the parties doesn't want the other to know about the money...
Interesting...

I remember when that involved actually getting up, looking for the dictionary, and physically turning the pages to find the word. Now, just highlight the word, right-click and select "search with google". (At least, if you are using Firefox. IE users are still stuck in the stone age, I guess)

For those that don't know nefarious means 'under water.' Transactions that occurr below the water surface are immune from state laws.

Something is extremely fishy because who wouldn't want that type of money? Exactly, not very many people. And clearly someone did want the money because they hired a lawyer. And clearly the lawyer thought he had no case, or something was going on, because he didn't want anything to do with the case after a while.

Re: Mystery Iowa Lottery ticket... any guesses on what the real story is?
it could be a fake ticket. For $7.5 million I bet someone could figure out how to recreate a lottery ticket. No special paper or ink is probably used. All someone would need to do is keep track of when lotteries are one, and when they are paid out. The numbers would be easy to come up with. There might be a bar code, but someone would be able to figure that out too.

The machine that prints it out probably has the info stored, and the IA lottery probably checks where the ticket was bought to make sure it is in the database. That is how they know when someone is a winner before the winner does.

They actually know how much money will be paid out by state after the numbers are picked.

I like the mafia theory. There's got to be a reason that a ton of these powerball and mega millions winners are from New York and New Jersey outside of pure population density.

Here's the story: U.S. News - $14.3 million lottery 'winner' abandons claim
Updated at 9:45 p.m. ET: The Associated Press reported that the Iowa Lottery said it had learned that Crawford Shaw, an attorney who said he represents a trust that owned a winning Iowa Lottery jackpot, was "associated with criminal proceedings and bankruptcy filings in New York and Delaware."
The AP said Shaw is the former chief executive officer of Industrial Enterprises of America Inc., a bankrupt public company that the Manhattan District Attorney's office said was looted in a $100 million securities fraud scheme.
