I was also told before I bought to necessarily not have a brand in mind but have a price range and to try difference bikes in the price range. There are slightly different measurements for each brand and some fit better depending on your height or your riding style. You should be able to drive the bikes around the parking lot to get a good feel. I don't know if you have ridden road bikes but some people don't like the riding style and find that out after buying them and riding a few times.
