Best awd vehicle?
My wife and I are looking at getting a new car this year, and here are her requirements:
All wheel drive
4 door
good gas mileage
as inexpensive as possible with the above
Seems like the Suburu Impreza and Legacy fit. Any recommendations or other ideas?

I got my wife the BMW 328xi last fall.........it gets around in the snow very well and lots of technology that it easy to use. they had some really good lease deals - basically 0% financing. gas mileage is ok, but i was used to driving my Cayene that got 12 mpg.

Fits well with the "inexpensive as possible" part... -

Look at the new Jeep Compass. We just bought one and have really enjoyed it thus far and it has everything you've listed.

I had an Impreza Outback for 14 years. Super fun car to drive. I didn't get great mileage, but I think the new ones are better.

My wife and I bought a 2011 Legacy Limited Edition, last year. We absolutely love it. Best car I have ever owned, period. When we were looking to buy, our list of requirements looked exactly like the ones you listed, and we could not be happier with our choice.
It's a great car to drive. Handles fantastic in bad weather. Gas mileage right around 29, depending on where you drive. Lots of room. The back seat is huge. We wanted to make sure that we could fit a big, rear facing child seat. It does, with ease. The back seat is very comfortable for passengers, even if the driver has his seat all the way back. And the price for the Limited was in the high 20's, but that includes nearly all the options. If you go with the Premium, you'll be in the mid 20's depending on what the option package is.
I would definitely recommend taking a Legacy for a test drive.

Re: Best awd vehicle?
I know this doesn't fit the "inexpensive" part, but a few co-workers of mine have an Audi A4. I think used ones (2 years old) are a relatively decent price. One co-worker said he can get over 30mpg on the hwy, which is great for an AWD vehicle.
From everything I've read, Audi is the leader in AWD implementation.
None of this is personal experience, just what others I know have indicated.

I've got a 2012 Subaru legacy 2.5i premium. Absolutely love it, got about 34 mpg the first time I took it to the Twin Cities from West Des Moines

Re: Best awd vehicle?
Subaru is probably going to be your best choice but with today's technology, a lot of people get awd when it's not needed. This is coming from someone who owns and awd car. Unless you live somewhere that gets a ton of snow, if you can't make it with fwd, then you shouldn't be driving.
