    ancestry.com

Any other ancestry.com addicts out there? I started using it about 3 weeks ago and can't get off of there. I've traced my name back to the 12th century and I think I'm related to the Stewart dynasty of Scottish kings. Any of you find anything interesting like that?

That is on my list to do at some point, but with 2 kids under 3, a FT job and CF, I really don't have any more free time.

    Re: ancestry.com

Haven't spent any $ yet, but have just got started as a hobby. Been using Geni.com, like the way it looks and lays out. Not very far yet, although found someone else who traced my great grandmas family back to Germany 1600s.

Neatest thing so far - surname is one of the border families between England & Scotland. Apparently they did so much thieving, killing, fighting, they got sent to Ulster Plantation (ie Ireland) which is where we thought we were from. So we're one of the "Border Reiver" families. Google it, its cool. Cooler if you are a Firefly fan.

    Re: ancestry.com

Had a membership before we had kids and it absolutely consumed me. I have been tracing my own family roots for years (Half Norsky, 1/4 German, 1/8 Swiss, 1/8 Scottish) but it was a blast for me to start seeing more branches and who I am related to now.

How do you start? How far back did you guys have to go on your own knowledge before you got a hit and were able to fly back in time on someone else's hard work?

I did the free trial thing and the documents they have blew my mind. Someday I hope to have time to dig further.

    Re: ancestry.com

I tried it for a while, but then found that the Dark Lord who killed my mentor is actually my father. That kinda sucked.

    Re: ancestry.com

It seems to help if you can make it past your great grandparents. I got zero hits until I got back that far. Then you get other people researching that you can piggy back off of.

    Re: ancestry.com

My dad used to and ive used it..he is real hit into it and found a lot. We already knew we were related to German/French/Austrian royalty of sorts but he used it to find all the other "little things" about the rest of the ancestors. Really kind of addicting.

    Re: ancestry.com

How well does the site work with common names such as Johnson, Olson, Smith, etc? Also, how well would this site work with a family surname change about 4 generations ago? Too many Olsons on the boat ride over, so my ancesters changed our last name to avoid confusion....or they were criminals running from the Swedish authorties.

    Re: ancestry.com

Not sure if I did ancestry or genealogy.com, but whichever one I did charged for each set/type of records that I wanted, so I cancelled. I did trace my mom's side back to England. Is ancestry a one fee per month gets you everything?
