Bring back negative rep. "Contrary to what many skeptics had earlier believed, the Soviet economy is proof that … a socialist command economy can function and even thrive."

Re: Des Moines Register to start charging for Online usage
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned it yet so I will. While I do find the lack of respect for anything ISU annoying, that is not the reason I do not like the Register and will never pay for it again. What really upsets me is the left-wing, liberal, progressive ... whatever people call it ... BIAS. If they printed stories that did investigative research and that covered local issues then I would consider it. What they do is publish stories to push their agenda and if they don't have stories they invent them and make issues out of nothing. As long as it fits the agenda they are pushing. This is not news; this is propaganda invented and used to support their agenda and I just hate that ****. Do they think their readers at too stupid to figure it out? Or do they just not care?

Re: Des Moines Register to start charging for Online usage
I don't care who presents what "facts", my facts are my opinions, which go like this. I used to read the register front to back when I was a kid. Back then it was thicker than a gossip magazine, unlike now. Sundays were a special treat. I pulled the big peach out first as soon as I got my hands on it. There was way more content back then, let alone relevant content. That is why I no longer will pay for the print copy or online usage. There's just not enough there to justify spending that $1 everyday, especially when my favorite part, sports section, is no more than 4-5 pages every single day.

Register circulation down 13% | Iowa Independent
Gannet touts that circulation increased 15% in that time, but Des Moines metro area grew over that time as well. To keep it in perspective, understand that from 2000 to 2010, roughly the same time period Gannett remarked upon, The Des Moines metro area grew by 26%. The DMR is underperforming the demographic by 11%. While that is better than papers in markets with other print alternatives, let's not pretend that they're doing a bang up job. The gap between the number of news consumers in the area and those who choose the DMR to meet their needs is growing.

Re: Des Moines Register to start charging for Online usage
The NY Times just cut their number of free articles per month in half from 20 to 10. See their entire policy here: The New York Times Digital Subscription
(including, e.g. how third-party links like from a site like Cyclone Fanatic relate):
Can I still access NYTimes.com articles through Facebook, Twitter, search engines or my blog?
Yes. We encourage links from Facebook, Twitter, search engines, blogs and social media. When you visit NYTimes.com through a link from one of these channels, that article (or video, slide show, etc.) will count toward your monthly limit of 10 free articles, but you will still be able to view it even if you’ve already read your 10 free articles. Like other external links, links from search engine results will count toward your monthly limit. If you have reached your monthly limit, you'll have a daily limit of 5 free articles through a given search engine. This limit applies to the majority of search engines.
Also the Omaha World-Herald changed their model to 20 free articles per month. This still won't affect me, though it could mean not clicking on an editorial title if I don't know what it is about, for example, and maybe not visiting their site as often (though it seems rare I would go over 20).
I'm using Google News more anyway and iGoogle just cleaned up their format and themes, that like I like a lot more (though I haven't used iGoogle much for a long time). With your own personalized categories in Google News (like "Iowa" and "Des Moines") I definitely see some news articles I would not have otherwise.
Maybe these changes will end up affecting me but I don't see it yet.
The Register's site is better than it used to be, but as they are going to start charging, I hope they consider a major revamp.

Welcome to the real world, almost every media has a bias. There are those on the left and those on the right and YOU have the choice of reading/listen to which ever one you lean towards. That is why we have the problems/issues we have today, people who only look at one point of view and believe everything their side says or prints. When you only read/listen to one side you really are not seeing the whole picture.
