Cityview-Best of Des Moines
Cityview | Cover Story - Pets after death
A lot of these I agree with but when you let the people vote, they sometimes are so wrong.
The questionable ones in my mind
Best Local Chinese = Hy-Vee
Best Local Seafood = Waterfront (Splash is better)
Best Local Steakhouse runner up = Texas Roadhouse (yuck)
Best Local Pizza = Gusto. I must be the only person in central Iowa that disagrees but I thought their pizza was just average.
Best Local Place for a $10 Dinner = Hy-Vee
Best Patio = Dos Rios
Best Type of Beer = Bud Light. Peace Tree was the runner up.
Best Local Beer Selection runner up = Hy-Vee
I really like Hy-Vee for grocery shopping and I worked there throughout high school and college but it's on too many of these lists.

Re: Cityview-Best of Des Moines
HyVee is great for shopping and improved wine and spirits, but their dining is just average, maybe slightly above average.
My guess is HyVee is paying advertising dollars to cityview.

I think Waterfront is a better place for seafood and frankly, more people can probably afford to go to it, so it gets votes.
And yes, you might be the only person who doesn't love Gusto Pizza

I really like Hy-Vee for grocery shopping and I worked there throughout high school and college but it's on too many of these lists. I suspect that the number of responses listing Hy Vee is a reflection of the current economy and it may be where many people can go when they "dine out." They do have a good selection of beer/wine but, if you're in Ames, Cyclone Liquors is much, much superior.

Re: Cityview-Best of Des Moines
Hy-Vee has pretty good beer selection, depending on which one you go to. Every Wine & Spirits is run somewhat independently, so they'll stock different things.
I'd pretty much agree that the others are terrible, except for maybe Gusto. I've had a lot of solid pizzas in Des Moines, but none that really seemed above and beyond. Pretty much anything remotely interesting that showed in that slot would be justified, IMO.
Hy-Vee as best Chinese and best place for a $10 dinner is just laughable. I can think of a million places with a better $10 dinner than Hy-Vee. Like 75% of the restaurants in this town.
mj4cy nailed it: Hy-Vee has to be paying them off on some of these.

A few others non food ones.
Best Car Dealership (foreign) = Toyota of DM. Service is ok but sales is terrible.
Best Local News Commentator = Rekha Basu

Saying the best type of beer is bud light automatically throws any credibility you might have had out the window.

Re: Cityview-Best of Des Moines
How did Centro win best restaurant overall, but not best Italian? By the way, I think Latin King is way overrated.

Re: Cityview-Best of Des Moines
Hy-vee Chinese is surprisingly good
Waterfront > Splash Still kind of strange to me that the owner of Splash also owns the best BBQ place in town, but it works.
TX roadhouse sucks, rather eat the meat outside of the lumberyard.
Gusto is decent, but I think that Wig n Pen is the best pizza in the DSM metro
There are better options in dsm for a 10$ dinner. Try capital pub n dog
dos rios does have a good patio, but would rather go to legends for their outside tvs.
hy vee wine n spirits is top notch in my book.

Re: Cityview-Best of Des Moines
For local beer selection they should have broken it up between bars and retail stores. Comparing a six pack you buy from Hy-Vee is a lot different than getting tap beer from el bait shop, royal mile, red monk, etc.

Re: Cityview-Best of Des Moines
Waterfront food is good but I always feel like the only person under 90 who is dining. They also need a serious remodel. Although it's been a couple of years since I've been there so maybe they have remodeled.
