Anyone had a deck built lately?
Wondering what the market is like as I've not had one built since 1997. I saw on one website that a basic cedar deck in the midwest averages anywhere between $10-16 per square foot installed. I'm having a 22x16 deck built and my first quote came in right at $4000 which I thought was pretty reasonable, and it falls nicely toward the low end of that range above (just over $11 per square foot.) Should I keep looking or is that a pretty good quote?

Seems pretty reasonable to me. I dont know a ton but helped a guy build our deck a few years ago and he did it cheap but there was a reason. A lot of times I caught him taking some short cuts. Just be sure your contractor does good work
Are you dead set on wood? We went with composite when we built ours. Saves some time and money as far as having to stain and seal down the road and looks pretty nice. Not quite as nice as wood, but once you're done there's little or no maintenance. May or may not be something to consider.

Finishing up my 13x16 deck w/PT lumber...$1,100 for the materials and couple weekends easy work. Menards has a computer kiosk where you enter the size, material type and options and prints out the material list and plans. The plans were acceptable for the building permit.

I could do it myself, I have basic man skills. Thing is, I just don't feel like it right now! Mrs. ruxCYtable just got a bonus and we feel like just writing the check and having it be done as opposed to me dragging it out all summer. Originally Posted by CycloneGB Are you dead set on wood? The guy who did the estimate said he did his own deck in cedar, he pressure washes it every year and re-stains it every 2-3 years and it is holding up very nicely.
PS: That's the first time I figured out how to successfully multi-quote. I feel like a new man.

$4000 seems pretty cheap for a cedar deck of that size. Unless they have a good connection, materials would be approaching $1500 to $2000. I would make sure that you check them out and dont pay a lot upfront.

Can we have a thread about a deck and not post this video?
