New Ford Mustang V-8 rated as world's most powerful
The supercharged 5.8-liter powerplant in the new 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been officially certified as the most powerful series production V-8 in the world, Ford says.
The massive engine was just Society of Automotive Engineers certified as producing peak output of 662 horsepower and 631 lbs.-ft. of torque. Ford has said it expects the car to have a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour. The GT500, made by Ford in Flat Rock, Mich., is the most powerful version of the Ford Mustang.
Yet even with an amazing 112 horsepower more than the 2012 model it replaces, the souped-up Mustang will get 1 mile per gallon more in both the city and on the highway. Its EPA-estimated gas mileage is 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, for 18 mpg combined. Ford points out that it won't have to pay the gas guzzler tax even though the car's horsepower output is matched only a handful of exotics costing upwards of $100,000. Price of the new GT500 is yet to be disclosed.
Ford, in fact, couldn't help but throw in a jab: GT500 will get 5 mpg more highway gas mileage than the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which has 82 fewer horses. In a continuing sore point for Ford, Camaro handily outsells Mustang.

Regardless, that's impressive. Although I'd hate to buy one now with the new body style coming out in a year or so.

It is still useless around the corners, that is what really matters.

This thing wallows going around a curve like a sow in mud on a 102 degree day.
If you want a more balanced (Power/handling) Mustang the Boss 302 is stellar.
No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine. -

A ZR1 Corvette will still eat it's lunch and it's a better looking car.

You are comparing apples to oranges bro. If you want to up the model type you have to look at the ford-GT not the mustang when comparing it to the vett. Everyone knows that........

Koenigsegg Agera R is a production car w/ a twin supercharged v8 that puts out over 1,000 hp. Ford must've forgot to see what Sweden was producing these days.

My guess is there is some kind of production number that they are basing this on. i.e. producting more than 100 cars, etc. Supposedly there is a 1000hp Shelby in the works as well, that will be a production car. So I assume that you have to hit a certain number of cars to be considered "production"

Everyone knows that........ Both have factory supercharged v-8's and are in the $100,000 range. This car was designed, built and marketed to compete with the ZR1. The GT is it's own beast.

So while its not the most powerful production V8 it is the most powerful that is produced in any type of significant quantity.

It will be interesting to see what the price of this car ends up being. The 2012 model was no where near $100,000. My guess is it will be right around $60,000. That's not cheap by any means, but still a ways away from $100,000 range.

And the part that caught my eye? "gas guzzler tax"
Just lovely.
