Re: April 29, 1992
I like Sublime, even paid for their music. But they did nothing groundbreaking, and bastardized some of my favorite reggae songs.
People like to put them on a pedestal, but they don't deserve this much love.

I don't mind cover songs, especially during live events. But when about half of your songs are covers, it tells me there is a certain talent level missing.

Re: April 29, 1992
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Hurt - Johnny Cash
The man who sold the world - Nirvana
Crossroads - Cream
Black magic woman - Santana
Turn the page - Metallica
I guess Yoda thinks all of these songs are overrated too since they're all cover songs

All of the bands/artists that did show up in you cover list did not RELY on the cover song to make it big. They actually wrote more music than they covered. Sublime, not so much.

Its Mr. Hungus to you. Actually, I was doing my reply when you typed yours so I missed it. I see your point. I don't agree with it, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

I still think Sublime's rendition of Scarlet Begonias is tons better than the original Dead version.
But you are entitled to your opinion also, CARL.

People like to put them on a pedestal, but they don't deserve this much love. I said unique sound. Not unique songs. Big difference. Those songs all being covers actually proves my point. They all sound waaaay different than the original. IMO Sublime is revered for their sound, which was amazing. They did rip off a ton of songs, and I'd venture to guess about 25% of the material they put out were covers. This doesn't take away from the way they sounded on those covers.
IMO Sublime is a very important band in the 90s, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Re: April 29, 1992
Did any of Sublime's covers get radio play? About all I ever heard on the radio was "Lovin is What I Got" and "Santaria." If they made it on the radio with original material, I'd say they made their names by themselves. Limp Biskit's first single was a George Michael cover - that should have been an omen for the suckage that was to come (though I thought their version of "Faith" was fun to listen to).
You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment. The moral: you gain more by not being stupid, than you do by being smart. Smart gets neutralized by other smart people. Stupid does not. -

I guess Yoda thinks all of these songs are overrated too since they're all cover songs Bob Dylan was the creator of that song.

But hey, if ripping others off and giving them little to no credit is unique, then I guess they are totally unique. You do realize the band leader died right as they were getting big? All bands start playing covers.
People liked Sublime's music and probably got turned on to "your" bands, I'm sure Toots is actually happy that Sublime existed.
Imitation is the sincerest form flattery.
