Re: Fat and unhappy, 34 yr old Yoga/workout advice??
run and regularly. I'm not being a smart ***. As nike says, just do it. running requires a pair of shoes and some will. You don't need to do insane distances either. 3 miles a day is a great level to target. try to do that 5 times a week.
Of course diet needs to be analyzed. know what your resting metabolic rate is and understand how many calories you need to lose weight at a consistent rate.
Good luck.

I got a fitbit the other month. The thing is pretty nifty. Nothing like technology to get you to reach your goals. I just slowly up my steps/miles/stairs per day. However, I do regularly workout as well. My problem seems to be my diet. Thank you college for the beer and more beer health plan.

No I dont wanna go pay for a trainor or any of that cockamamy commercialized ****. Anybody on her have any advice, I dont even know where to start. I need to lose 40 good llbs and preferrably so they stay off. My self confidence is shot and I feel like a whale and Im 34 yrs old, not too late to actually do something about it.
I know there is no secret pill and Im not afraid to work hard, its just been so long since i worked out regularly that Im just not sure where to start. So bottom line, I want to burn fat and gain muscle, not too much as getting big is not the idea. I want to lean down, yet be strong. Any advice besides the "smart *** ones" would be very helpful. I know I didnt want to do anything commercialized, but if somebody would recomment the Insanity workouts, then I would try it.
I also know that flexabilty also helps in all aspects of life so Im king of interested in starting a yoga class too. Anybody with any experience, or words of wisdom? Thanks again for any advice. Im just a fella trying to better myself to not only feel better about myself but to also make myself more appealing and lead a much healthier lifestyle. Thank you AGAIN!!!!! Right there with you man, I need to lose about the same amount of weight and I'm the same height as you. Currently I've lost 12 lbs doing insanity/diet.

If your a #'s person, it works really well. Its not for everyone but I had great success it. The best part is the convenience...you can add an "app" to your phone, even a scanner to scan bar codes and get the points.
PM me if want more details. Weight Watchers is a great program. I am 5'11 and weighed 255 lbs in 2003. Weight Watchers got me down to 217 in a few months. Since then I have strayed from WW but still do some of the basics but I have increased my exercise a lot. I am about 204 now and my physique is different. (I am not ripped at all, the fat is just much harder to see )
There is a machine we bought for our house, the Schwinn Airdyne. This is an exercise bike that makes you use your arms too. The cost for delivery and everything was about $670 so it is not cheap but being able to use it throughout the year is great. The bike lasts for years...

My ,"Ill start working out when I get this weight" thought just kept getting bigger and bigger. Sick of feeling tired all of the time and losing confidence in my self. So, here I go, thanks again Fanatics!! I just started Warrior Cardio (Amazon.com: Warrior Cardio: The Revolutionary Metabolic Training System for Burning Fat, Building Muscle, and Getting Fit (9780062074287): Martin Rooney: Books), and it has some great concepts. Also have a bad ankle, and it's really improving from the work. I do that three times a week, and swim on the other days, and that's really helped, although I was already in pretty solid shape. I've done P90X and Insanity a little bit. Really enjoyed both of them, probably Insanity more, but I started to quickly lose muscle mass when I used it. A big thing is just cutting out carbs, and loading up on protein. Also, check out intermittent fasting...it sounds crazy and hard, but it actually makes you feel a lot better when you do it periodically.

Seeing how much snacking adds up and how calorie-dense some foods are have motivated me to make better choices. Still eat bad (literally just polished off a bag of m&m's) but now can budget for them.

Re: Fat and unhappy, 34 yr old Yoga/workout advice??
One thing to watch out for is 'rewarding' yourself if you do great with a new workout. Your reward should NOT be food. So many of my friends negate all of their work outs for an entire week with one day of 'rewarding' themselves with terrible food.

You can even eat the terrible food, but just count the calories in it. I was going to eat a slice of pizza on sat. but then I looked at how many calories are in one and decided I could eat about 4 other meals for that amount.

I'm too lazy to go back and read the OP, but if you are married or have a significant other, work out some "rewards" from her to help you "get healthy". Great incentive if you have testosterone.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -
Re: Fat and unhappy, 34 yr old Yoga/workout advice??
There is a ton of good advice here, I would vote Clone5 for the best. But let me add my $0.02.
For exercise, do something that you enjoy - that way you will keep doing it. If you do something you hate (I hate running) then guess what? You ain't gonna do it.
Let me suggest martial arts. Balance, flexibility, muscle tone. Free sparring is a hell of an aerobic work out. Mentally challenging. Self-defense is a nice benefit. And you can do it with your kids usually. If it turns out to be your thing, you can do it until you die.
