I play quite a bit. I only use a driver and a putter. Can take a whiile to find a driver you like though. Test out a few different ones, different weights and stability and see what you like. You can try different techniques, like sidearm to broaden your skills.

My favorite courses are Southwoods, Walnut Ridge, and Big Creek in DSM area and Carroll Marty in Ames. Don't be one of those dbags that throws their garbage/beer cans on the course. Clean up after yourself if you take beer out. Always try to play where it lies, unless it is in water. And let small groups play through. Other than that, enjoy.

I've played a total of twice in my life, and smoked about the same amount. But I had a bunch of friends who played in college, and that is literally the only 2 discs and the only thing they carried with them.

Yeah just buy a cheap driver and putter until you get some experience and learn how you want to play. Once you get decently skilled is when you can really figure out what you want.

I would suggest a more stable driver since i will go a little straighter and be easier to control, at least until you can throw your driver and get it to make the "S" pattern consistently where you would benefit from a more unstable one.

A good driver to start with is the Discraft Cyclone. It has a great name and flies very straight, perfect for getting the hang of the game.

Just buy a bunch of cheap drivers for now. you will lose them. My kids finally are good enough not to lose them, but then they let their friends borrow and subsequently lose them.

I play disc golf quite bit and have never smoked weed while doing so. Disc golf is a fun, cheap game. Start out with a driver and putter to get the feel for them, then move on to finding a good mid range and possibly a shorter fairway driver. It also helps to test out your friends discs to see which ones feel best. I recommend the innova destoyer or orc because I throw those best but it all depends on how you throw, I'm a sidearm thrower.

    Re: Disc Golf.

Go out and buy a driver and putter.
Find out what's easier for you, throwing back hand or forehand. Or, both.
If you throw backhand, don't make the mistake of releasing with your hand higher than where it started, this will cause the disc to fly high and curve rapidly to the left and into the ground. Always release the disc flat (if not slightly slanted to the right, this will give you that signature "S" curve). A good tip is to throw directly across your chest.
The more wrist action, the faster the disc spins, and the farther it flys.
If you have a weaker arm, get a light driver, probably 160-170 grams.
If you have a stronger arm, get a heavier driver 170+ grams.
Heavier drivers do better in the wind. If you have a strong arm and a lighter disc and the winds are calm, you can drive them 500+ feet. (assuming you have a good drive in the first place).
Disc Golf drivers are made to be thrown with 100% effort. If not, they won't fly correctly. So, don't go out there with a driver and toss it like you're playing catch. You need to throw them with a lot of force to get them to move/curve correctly.
Once you get better and learn to throw, you can get more discs that weigh different, curve different, fly different lengths, etc.
ALWAYS get a bright colored disc. Unless you want to spend countless hours looking for it and losing them. Bright Orange is the easiest to see.
Stay away from green, yellow, and blue colored discs. They are very tough to spot if they fly into the woods or longer grass.
Please don't ever call Disc Golf, "Frolf". They aren't frisbees, they are DISCS.

I would recommend the Innova Groove. I have 3 of them and they fly great both backhand and forehand.
Innova Beast, Boss, and Orc are other good drivers.

No matter how cool it may look, do not buy a camouflage driver.

    Re: Disc Golf.

I just started playing this spring and really like it. You will be hooked if you can get any good at it. Like others have said go out and throw your friends' discs around and see what you like. I started with an Innova destroyer t hat's really stable and worked great for a beginner. I moved on to an Innova Pro Wraith that isn't nearly as stable but I can make it curve anyway I want. Pretty much any putter will work. One tip: Make sure you go throw quite a bit before you go to the course or you will catch a ton of **** from the hipsters who are pros.

Good luck though. Don't take it too seriously at the beginning or you just won't like it. If you practice you will be good in no time. I have only gone about 10 times and my best day I was only 3 over, so don't get discouraged when you can't keep track of your score the first day.

    Re: Disc Golf.

When you are throwing a driver backhand you are going to want to pull the disc across your chest. A good way to think about it is "starting a lawn mower" motion. You aren't going to you use your wrist as much as you would in Ultimate.

When using your putter backhand you can use more of an Ultimate throwing motion.

    Re: Disc Golf.

The only thing I'll add - start with a mid range driver instead of a long one (in addition to the putter). The long range ones take some decent technique to control. Innova Shark or Eagle or similar. Also - I bet someone would give you a couple old discs. I know I have several old discs I never use anymore.

    Re: Disc Golf.

Best advice I can give: Go to Jax in west Ames. They have a beginners set for Frolf that I just bought last summer. Comes with three discs including a driver and a putter, and it also comes with a description of what discs to use, when. And also other discs you could buy to improve your game.
