I did a search and didn't see a post about this anywhere, but I have a feeling that there are many on here who have a strong connection to this man from their childhood. Rest in peace, Mr. Sendak.
As portrayed by Mr. Sendak, the wild things are deliciously grotesque: huge, snaggletoothed, exquisitely hirsute and glowering maniacally. He always maintained he was drawing his relatives — who, in his memory at least, had hovered like a pack of middle-aged gargoyles above the childhood sickbed to which he was often confined.

Freshman year I lived in Bergman House, Larch. Monsters from "Where The Wild Things Are" were painted on our dorm. I haven't been back there since, no idea if those are still even there.
They say that English surnames came from what you did with your life. I'm so glad my last name isn't Dickinson.
