I find this confusing. The city was under siege by "northmen" before the iron islanders left. Obviously whoever had the city under siege was not friendly to the Starks, or else Bran wouldn't have needed to flee, and the city wouldn't have been sacked and abandoned. I would think "northmen" would mean the people of Winterfell, but maybe not. I thought the last episode was awesome, but this was poorly explained.

So if I wanted to start reading the book right now after the first two tv seasons... which book should I start with? Will I be lost in the books without reading the first couple?

You could read book 3 and not be lost. But i read book one after watching season one and still loved it.

Little things are combined or streamlined but nothing earth shattering is different. You'll see a handful of minor characters or places you don't know is all but nothing that really contradicts what you've seen.

Haven't watched the episode yet but you're on the right track that they're less than honorable northmen (not from Winterfell though) who've mad a back room type of deal. I'm guessing ep 1 of next season will make it quite clear if they continue following the books, understandable to be confused I think.

Loved the finale. I'd practically forgotten about the White Walkers and their zombies (love the zombie horse) until they made their huge return at the cliffhanger. Good ending for the season, going to be a long wait til next year.

You're going to need some dragon fire to stop those White Walkers, IMO.

I bet alot of people did. Well, except the True Blood fans - I think the show is just OK but the girlfriend likes it. But I have to say that new show Girls that comes on after Game of Thrones is hilarious.

Not yet, but I need to. I actually plan on cutting the cord completely now that GoT is over. Not sure what I'm going to do when season 3 starts. It a long wait for those DVDs to come out.
