We're not solely looking at breeders for a new dog. Just exploring our options. We obviously want another golden but also a puppy or young dog for our daughters that we can train and acclimate to our family during summer break. They are 9 and 11 and never had the joy or experience of raising a puppy which we'd like to have for them as children.
We have looked at the RAGOM folks and are strongly considering going that route. Their vetting process, as well as some other rescue organizations, is pretty strict however and just because they have puppies or young dogs they may not deem it a match depending on our household vs. the dog's attributes. If the rescue group thinks the kids are too young, the dog doesn't have a playmate, yard's not big enough, etc they will not place the dog.
I think if I showed them the Quicken report of how much we spent on the previous dog's vet bills we'd be a good candidate however.
Don't let their online process intimidate you. Let it be an adventure. The local woman who did our home visit (Ames) was very accommodating. She was interested in being the assured the dog wouldn't be abandoned, not living outside, having a decent diet, etc. She brought her two Golden's with her for the site visit and innocently observed how we and they responded. How could you not like a Golden?

If you could include Minnesota in your Golden search, you will find a ton of breeders. In fact Minneapolis itself is a real hotbed for this breed. My guy came from Detroit Lakes & is a sensational dog. Would also suggest an Asterling(sp?) - light colored, mello and great pets.
I have a golden x yellow lab mix. Perfect dog, would love another when the kids get a bit older.

I would never get a dog older than seven weeks from any shelter. I have owned over 24 hunting dogs and it is how they are raised. I have had two friends go to the shelter and bring back dogs from hell. They can not be trained or have mental problems that rip everything apart and four years later they are the same after a lot of money spent on them. IF I HAD CHILDREN or grand children no way would I bring in a older dog from the shelter to my house. A lot of dogs are in the shelter for the very reason they are not a very suitable pet.
But if you like to roll the dice their are dogs in the shelter that are nice dogs, the question is which one. I have gone to shelters and helped socialize and walk shelter dogs and some should be put down. The one shelter was keeping a pit bull for life because no one wanted to take it home.
I one time I scanned the dogs at English Setter Resuce but they do not allow a dog to a hunters home if they are kenneled and do not have a fenced in yard.
Every dog we've had came from the shelter and were way older than 7 weeks. Never had a problem with any of them. By far the best dogs out there. I know numerous people who went to breeders and regret that decision for multiple reasons. To say that dogs who come shelters "are there for a reason", implying that there is something wrong with them is some sort of shortcut to thinking. Most have simply gotten away from their owners and were picked up by animal control or dropped off b/c their new place doesn't allow pets. Do you honestly think the majority of dogs at the shelter are there b/c of behavioral issues?
why would you have a child when there are so many more children that need to be adopted?
why do you pick a gas car instead of a green car if there are a lot more better for environment options? or simply just take the bus instead of owning a car.
why do you eat unhealthy food when there are a lot more expensive healthy options? if everyone stopped eating crap those food places would get shut down and i would have more healthy options.
Adopting a dog is a great choice, but not the only choice. He wants a golden puppy to watch it grow to his family, if he adopts, one he may not get a 100% golden.
ps the problem isnt people buying puppies from breeders, the problem is people letting dogs have puppies and then abandoning them, or someone buying a puppy and then taking it too a shelter because they dont want to take care of it. Those people are the only problems.
ever try to adopt a child? wonder why so many US folks adopt overseas.......hmmmm
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened.”
– Norman Thomas, American socialist and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America
We have an in house interview with somebody from RAGOM late Wednesday afternoon. She's bringing her dog, not the one potentially being adopted, to check us out and see how we interact I guess. My wife asked how long it would take because my daughter had soccer practice. Response...hour to an hour and a half.
I can get a mortgage easier than one of these dogs. Any idea what we're going to do for 1-1.5 hours?
The search has ended. This is Leah. Half Golden Retriever, half something else. Possibly a shepherd, black lab or rottweiler? Many of her siblings were mainly black. She's 9.5 weeks. She was from the Iowa Golden Retriever Rescue group.

She has sheppard written all over her. Beautiful dog though for sure.
