3D TV Help

We just purchased our first 3D TV. A passive LG 3D set. My daughter was having a birthday sleepover party tonight and we tried a PPV 3D movie on a whim. I enabled the 3D, the girls got their glasses on, but it didn't perform as I expected. I know the signal is split into left and right for each eye, but I was under the impression that the glasses were supposed to combine things into one image. Of myself and the 4 girls, none of us saw it combined into one image. Just two 3D images.

Is this how it works? Are the glasses wrong? They are non powered (passive) 3D glasses, but are there different kinds for different sets?

Well, did the glasses come with your TV? If you're just using like movie theater ones, I can't guarantee those will work. Mine are active glasses, so hard to compare, but I know some passive glasses don't always look the best with other passive 3d sets.

LG has a few different 3d settings, but if you're watching 3d content, you shouldn't need to turn the 3d on (should just come through as 3d natively). If converting you should have 3 or so default settings can use, though I only really use the 2d->3d mode and don't split the image.

Edit: what model do you have?

55LM5800. Some of the glasses came with the TV. Others we got free as part of a promotion. I believe the girls are mixing between the two because some are orange and some are white. The image was split by default even before I starting trying different settings.

Yeah, those are all LG's Cinema 3D glasses for passive 3D, which are compatible with your model.

Do you have HDMI 1.4 or do you have an older HDMI cable? Are you using RGB or DLNA? I don't think those support frame packing, which could explain the 3D formats available.

At this point it almost has to be one of those that isn't supporting frame packing or your receiver is not allowing the images through. If none of those help.....sorry I don't think I can think of anything else.

If you find that you don't have a 3D "rated" HDMI cable, no Fanatic should waste their money on some of those cables out there. Stick with Monoprice: HDMI Cable

I'm using whatever HDMI cable came with the HD cable box. Not sure what it's rated. Hopefully that's the problem however.

I have a standard HDMI cable, you shouldn't need anything 3D related. How are you playing to 3D Movie? PS3?

If it was a cable he got around 2010, it would have been very possible that it was NOT able to send 2 simultaneous signals. Most if not all HDMI cables these days support 3D, but I didn't know when he got the cable.

Sounds like everything SHOULD be fine unless your receiver is not compatible with your TV (3D wise).

I guess I don't know what provider you have, but DirecTV compatible 3D TVs according to their site (though I don't necessarily believe this based on the limited models listed)

Firmware upgrade for your TV? This would really only be if your TV was not originally "supported" by your provider, but the upgrade could get you there. At this point I'm reaching......but I would check firmware.

I got the HD box and cable from Mediacom around the 1st of the year. There is no receiver involved at this point; Direct from cable box to TV. Mediacom's 3D content may be fairly new however and I'm guessing (hoping) the cable is the point of failure.

Try to adjust the 3-D settings on your tv and report back.

I had four antsy 12 year old girls giving me the business at the time, but I'm pretty sure I tried all the different 3D options. Some worked better than others, but none combined the left and right into one image as far as we could tell.

Could it be the source material? What were you watching? I'm had no luck with 3D on those "3D" youtube videos and even some of the streaming stuff. But the 3D blurays usually work fine.

Dolphin Tale via Mediacom PPV. Going to replace the HDMI cable and give it another try.
