My son & daughter received new laptops at Christmas from my father-in-law. They received identical computers - Toshiba Satellites. Recently, my son's laptop won't connect to the internet. Every other device in the house has no problem (PS3, iPad, MacBook, phones, etc) including my daughter's laptop (the exact same computer). But my son's laptop won't open anything on the internet even when the computer says it is connected to the network.
I've been doing some troubleshooting and have noticed that if I completely reset the wireless router that I can connect to the internet immediately after the reset. However, it won't connect to the internet when you try to use it later unless you reset the router again. I've used both IE and Chrome & both are doing the same thing. I can get on the internet using both browsers only immediately after a reset of the router, but neither will connect after that. I've reset the settings in IE as well & that didn't work either.
I contacted CenturyLink, our internet provider, and while they tried to be helpful it's not ultimately their problem since our internet service is just fine. I called Toshiba & they suggested that I try to reset the settings in IE (which I have already tried) but beyond that they want to charge me $50 for a year's worth of phone support. Before I even contemplate paying the $50, I thought I'd throw this out to everybody here and see if there are any suggestions.
Yeah, my guess would have been the proxy settings were turned on. Options ---> Connections ---> LAN Settings....see if the box under proxy server is checked. If so, uncheck it. But I assume resetting the settings would have fixed that. IDK.
By "when you try to use it later" do you mean you've closed the browser or minimized it or it just loses the connection eventually no matter what you do? Also, when this happens is there another program such as anti-virus or Outlook or something that IS able to connect? Re-starting the computer doesn't help if you don't reset the router?
Download and update malwarebytes on that computer and do a full scan and see if it finds anything. After that regardless if it finds something or not download this:
Ccleaner and install it and clear out the temporary problems.
If it is not the proxy settings or one of the things I listed above, it is likely the wireless card. Since they were Christmas presents they should still be under warranty.
