I couldn't disagree with this more. Working is part of the transformation from depending on parents to depending on yourself. If you're so involved that getting a job is difficult (sports, theater, choir, etc.) because you don't have a lot of time outside school/practices that's one thing, but if you just go to school from 8-3 in high school and then go sit and play WoW you need a job.
The same is even more true in college. If you have class from 11-3 MWF and 10-2 T/Th, there's absolutely no reason NOT to have a job. I realize you haven't been out of school for THAT long but unless mommy and daddy are paying all of your college expenses, you need a job.
You somewhat got away with taking as much loan money as you want because you got a useful degree and have the ability in the accounting world to earn a very good salary straight out of school. You also were in school at a time when loan interest rates were a lot lower than they are now. Tuition costs when you were in school were also lower as were most other costs.
The last reason I have for working during high school and college is so you can find a job later on. Having worked during high school made finding an internship when I got to Iowa State incredibly easy. Now during college I worked a couple different internships and didn't have issues at all finding a job post-grad. Working teaches you a lot of things they can't teach you in a classroom.
