The Indy 500 is 33 names that aren't familiar to anyone except die-hard Indy race fans. Hence, Danica's name every 3 minutes.

To bad, too. The race used to be The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Not anymore.

1. Ditch Gomer Pyle signing the national anthem.
2. Ditch Brent Musberger in the announcer's booth.
3. Ditch the regulations. Hundreds of thousands used to attend Saturday time trials. They attended to see speed records. They don't attend any more. There are no speed records being broken. They don't attend when every car looks the same, sounds the same, is basically the same.
4. The announcers spend too much time talking about gas mileage.

Let 'em race.

You are correct. I can't listen to his voice. Gomer Pyle. Shazam! It was a recorded version. They said he was at home in Hawaii. Now that's close to Indiana. That just adds to my point. Get something fresh. Get something exciting. Get something that brings back the fans and the excitement.

The excitement is the racing. Indy cars (on oval tracks) are so much more entertaining to watch than NASCAR. They are full throttle for 500 miles in a car that commands your attention every second of the race. I'm not a race fan by any means, but the Indy 500 is the most exciting event in motor sports.

Serious question: Has Danica finished a single race this season? Seems like every other mention of her I hear, it's she wrecked out before the race finished.

Even if you're not a race fan, I would recommend attending the Indy 500 at least once. I doubt if I'll ever be around so many people at one time. 400-500K people in one place is pretty sweet. What's nuts is that it took me less time to get from my car to the interstate than an ISU game with 1/10th the crowd.

He was not there due to illness.

Neither the Indy 500 not the Coke 600 were too exciting today. The restarts were the best part of Indy.

I agree that Musburger needs to not be the TV announcer; he is terrible for all sports.

I find it hard to belive you have been there when youre calling it the Indiana 500... but that's another argument.

As for the 230... they have NEVER gone that fast during the race. The pace is slower than qualifying. As for the safety, can you really blame IndyCar for slowing them down? After what happened at Vegas with Dan, it's amazing. And if you've ever been there and gone through the museum, you would be amazed at the safety upgrades,even from 5the years ago. Once you are in the car, you aren't moving at all!

1. The race is still the "greatest spectacle in racing." Watching on TV is nothing like being there which underscores and proves that statement. Being at the race, I don't have the chance to hear Brent M. so can't comment on that.
2. Jim Nabors doesn't sing the national anthem. He sings "Back Home in Indiana." Please get your facts straight prior to making statements.
3. Jim Nabors plus Florence singing "God Bless America" are two of the many rich traditions of the great pageantry of this event. These traditions must be kept and built upon.
4. Danica Patrick's presence did result in added interest and excitement to the race, although she wasn't a big winner. Now, seems like she's went nothing but downhill at NASCAR (similar to Sam Hornish, Jr.). Indy could use another spark like Danica, no doubt about it.

Bottom line, the race is a great event. You don't need to be a gear head to attend. IMO, most any good sports fan would enjoy it at least once.
