Anyone from El Paso?
I just found out that I will be stationed at Ft. Bliss in January. It is the El Paso area. I was just wondering if anyone is from there or has an experience with the city. I know it is a couple miles north of Juarez and Mexico which will probably be off limits for me due to it being black listed by the Army. I also know it is hot as balls down there. After that I have no idea what to expect.
Hopefully I can catch some cyclones games when they visit Texas.

Re: Anyone from El Paso?
Hot, dry, and nothing much for quite a distance. Thankfully you'll be there in January so it won't be too hot. Similar to ~March-April in Iowa.
Do yourself a favor if you have any down time and head up to the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns. Many other cool places in southern New Mexico to see if you like natural features.
Not sure if you would be allowed to do so (distance to Mexico border) but Big Bend a cool place to go. When my brother lived in Texas he wasn't allowed to get with 75 miles of the Mexican border (Air Force).

El Paso to Austin - ~8-9 hours
El Paso to DFW - ~10 hours
Most towns in Texas have decent regional airports for this reason. United/American/Southwest are the common puddle jumping airlines to check.

When you have time, drive to Ruidoso and Cloudcroft for pretty good skiing. Stop at White Sands while you are at it.
Dine at Indian Cliffs Ranch at Fabens, at make sure you stop at a Leo's restaurant for authentic Tex-Mex food. Also try Peppe's if it's still open.
Go to Cowtown Boots and buy yourself a pair. Better yet, if you feel it's safe enough, walk across the downtown bridge to Juarez and have a pair custom made for you.
Buy tickets and go watch Floyd coach the Miners.
I don't think they have the event in January, but a bull fight is a spectacle to experience (Juarez).
It won't be hot in January. In fact, you may experience light snow due to the elevation.

Re: Anyone from El Paso?
Irony - I'll be at Ft Bliss next week performing a Val/Ver on the M777A2 Howitzer TrAK system. Fourth military base I'll have visited in my civilian Army career (I've been to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, Ft Drum in upstate New York, and for 7 years I was stationed at Rock Island Arsenal, which is now home to First Army. I do not count Detroit or Picatinny Arsenals in this count because neither of them are really bases, they just host Army/Military activities.)
Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice? Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.
