When I lived in Iowa City, my place would be swarming with these things. 15 miles to the east, I have virtually none. I have real ladybugs in my backyard.

I also have a uncommon amount of box elder bug action.

I've been spraying Eight on the Maple tree that we planted out back. It lasts for about a week before I have to reapply it. It doesn't keep ALL of them away, but I went from routinely having 75-100 of them on the tree to half a dozen at most. They seem to like something new each year that they left alone the previous. I'm holding out hope they don't suddenly get an appetite for my pear tree in the front yard.

You're lucky let me post this video. I used a trap, but maybe that was the wrong idea. But, the tree was about killed the tree already.

Spray Eight once a week on the foliage of whatever they are all over and you will see a 75-90% reduction in them. If you do it for about 4 week straight that is about enough to get you through the season.

    Otherwise you are screwed.

    Pheromone trap?

If so, yeah don't do that it just attracts them in greater numbers to your house.

Yes, the Sevin spray works. I use the one that attaches to your hose so you can spray down your tree.

Sevin works well. They have hit our apple trees, roses, grapes, wild grapes, crabapple trees and oak trees. Hate those things!

    Re: Japanese Beetles Annual Thread

    Insecticide rules for Japanese beetles:

Permethrin, lambda cyhalothrin, cyfluthrin, etc only works on direct contact. Directly spraying it on them. Base treatments, root treatments will not work. They fly to the leaves.

Sevin only works when they eat the stuff. It is very safe for mammals. it is the most effective product for Japanese beetles on shrubs, plants, trees, soybeans.....you name it. But it washes off easily.. 7 days residual with no rain max.... Then retreat if/when they reinvest.

CNI's like imidacloprid or thiomethaxam... Are ok... If mixed with a pyrethroids. Not sure if it's a digestive kill or contact.

I would use sevin twice before I'd try anything else.

AH! DON"T USE THE TRAP! THE TRAP BRINGS IN MORE BEETLES THAN IT CATCHES. IT HELP YOU ESTABLISH A LARGER POPULATION THAN WHAT YOU STARTED WITH!!!! You're neighbors will be given one free punch to the throat if you set up a trap.

With that said, want to see something disgusting? Check out this blog from Erin Hodgson, ISU Extension Entomologist - - pictures of a trap top on a 13-gal trash bag. The trash bag was overfilled in one night. It's a Bug's Life.

Mfers have taken over my basil. Hoping if I leave it in the garden they'll be satisfied with that and leave the rest alone. Looks like no pesto for me this year.
