By the way- you can float over a dip with mortar, but that won't provide any structural support for the rot.

I wasn't trying to critisize, I was just observing. If you reread your initial post it sounds like someone who watched an episode of HGTV and started tearing things out.

Your responses since then are more encouraging but when you asked about just covering up your damaged floor it sent up a huge red flag as does your hesitancy to just replace the subfloor. Is the crack in the tile over the unlevel spot in your floor? Larger floor tiles like you are using require super flat surfaces. And seriously, run your 2nd opinions past a regular tile forum, I'm not trying to be mean or rude I feel it would be in your best interest to do it right the first time.

The leaking is likely from the wax ring at the base of the toilet. The way to determine if the subfloor needs replaced is to stand over the toilet with the bowl between your knees (seriously) and try to rock the toilet side to side. If it moves it means that it needs to be pulled, subfloor replaced, then the cement board put in place, then tiled, then new wax ring set in place, then the toilet put pack in. You can buy extended bolts and extended wax rings to account for the cement board height.

Yes morter bed is the thinset. Just level it higher when setting your tile. 13x13 will be a good size to work with. Sounds like you're on the right track. Just make sure your thinset is not to runny or loose when leveling it up, it will cause a big mess at the grout joints by squeezing to much thin set up through.

    Re: Bath remodel help

Oh man, this project has sucked major balls. I just finished thinsetting and laying the tile last night. I did end up ripping out those rotted boards, as it turns out, they were useless. They were just thin sheets of plywood there to raise the floor even with the hallway. 3/4" subfloor underneith was just fine. Had a friend come down and help me put up the boards and mud the joints on saturday and sunday. I will post some pictures as soon as I take some. Now I just need to grout, seal, caulk, paint the walls, reseat toilet, install new vanity, install trim and done! No more projects like this. I must have lost my mind thinking I could do this in 5 days lol.
