The best prime rib I have had in decades was a meeting with several colonies in SD. They started with actual USDA Prime grade instead of USDA Choice or store brand that is usually sold as prime rib. Seasoned and cooked in oven for 20 hours at 135 degrees. Came out a perefect medium rare and so tender you did not need a knife.

Prime rib and a rib eye are the same thing, just prepared differently. So at home, I've always gone for a similarly seasoned rib eye off the grill.

We should all be able to agree that there's nothing worse than paying top dollar for bad prime rib. Fatty cuts, poorly seasoned, over cooked. Prime rib in the wrong hands is bad news.

Those who have said you have to pay big bucks for a big steak, I disagree. Some of the best steaks I have had in Des Moines have been at Iowa Beef Steakhouse and it's half the price of 801. One of the main reasons you go to a place like 801 is the first class service, the wine selections and parings, and the attention to detail.

This is a great list. I especially like Chicago Speakeasy. They still have a good salad bar - which is a bit of a lost art.

I had a very good Cajun Prime Rib at the Greenbrier recently.

Well I think it is the best and will continue on buying it. It also usually is cheaper, and I think the guys there know the cuts/how to cook them a little more than other stores.

The Greenbriar Restaurant on Merle Hay Road in Johnston has excellent prime rib.

question for you people who cook on a smoker... when I cook in a oven, I like to cook at 500 degress for 15-20 min.. then slow cook at around 200-225 to internal temp of 125.

question is, could i still "sear" it in the oven at that 500 for 15-20 min then put it in the smoker?? I dont see why i couldnt, just wonder if the sear effect would keep some of the smoke flavor out of the meat!

Also CW Can vouche for this... not Des Moines area, but I would put J Bruner's in Clarinda up against any Prime rib on the Planet!

As far as the pricey steak places go, I tend to stay away from the prime rib at those places! 801, sullivans, mahagoney ruth chris, etc. they now how to cook a steak! but to me there prime rib they just go threw the motions.. nothing better then a roast if you ask me...

I don't know how people eat prime rib. The fat makes me gag.

Agree with this. 801 does have good steaks but you'll find equal steaks elsewhere for half the price. You won't find the wine selection 801 has just about anywhere in Des Moines, is there another place in Des Moines that you can get your filet medallions with $1000 bottle of wine?
