Far be it from me to speculate what the "proper" response is to learning your child is missing-- I can't even what that would do to your psyche or behavior. But I've thought all along that their statements have been a little strange. I'm in the group that the emotions they are showing don't mean anything. There have been instances where people have reacted on every level of the emotion spectrum both when they are guilty and not guilty. However the bolded part above is what makes me really suspicious. I haven't read much on this so I'm not sure what exactly was said, but when the parents come out and disregard other things that may have happened (drowning, lost in the woods, etc in this case) and focus on the abduction, while also giving possible scenarios, they are more times than not trying to steer the investigation one way. -

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. -

I'm out and about constantly, I even though I know it occurs all around me, I can't recall actually watching people get in and out of their cars with their kids. To any passer-by, loading a couple of kids in a car is American as apple pie. We don't think about this trivial behavior until we are cruely reminded that we should.
One can only have so much situational awareness.

I don't think this is odd actually. If it were my kid, I'd want the focus to be on the abduction and I'd speculate and bring as much attention to it as possible. If they are at the bottom of the lake, there isn't any helping them. But if they were abducted, I'd want everyone's eyes peeled immediately.

They are searching the landfill now. I don't think they have any clue where these girls are and they are digging for anything.

One can only have so much situational awareness. I'd like to think if I was there and saw two little girls, unsupervised, riding their bikes around the lake, and watched them get into a car, leaving their bikes behind,I would take notice. To be honest though, I'd probably be more as you described and it wouldn't even register.
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. -

Strange parents.

Re: Two missing girls
Wow. This article about the parents makes them sound very sketchy. Regardless of the claim that their past trangressions had nothing to do with this, One has to wonder what type of people these poor kids came in contact with over their lifetimes and if that has anything to do with this Lyric's mother: Family history 'has nothing to do with the disappearance of our children' Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -

Re: Two missing girls
Good lord people. This rumor has been out there for a while. The parents are just saying they had nothing to do with it. From everything I've seen, heard about, and read about these families, it's that they are productive contributors to society, the family has always been close (if there was any concern about "associates," then I'm sure Elizabeth's parents, or people they used to know, they would have said something already.
I'm sure many of you people have a poor opinion of what goes on up here in the 'Loo and the area, but it's a damned safe place. It's more diverse than a lot of places in Iowa, and has more poverty, but that doesn't mean ****.
I don't get the idea of judging people you don't even know because "you have a hunch" based on sound bites and quotes that generally, are used to gain hits on web articles.
Oh hey, how about the churches around the entire community that are providing vigils and prayer sessions for this event? I bet they could be involved, because hey, what better way to get people into your establishment than an abduction? I mean hell, the reverend of a predominately black church is holding one tomorrow night up here. Let's look at that community, they're gaining press because of this.
Seriously, let's worry about the girls, and not try and be the law enforcement experts. Hardly anyone on here is one, and the ones talking like they are ones are just spreading/starting rumors.

Re: Two missing girls
In regards to it being seen by traffic driving by I'm not so sure. I drive by there a lot and definitely notice the lake. But when you are flying by at 70 mph I'm not sure you'd really notice. With the construction traffic might be slower, but you are likely paying more attention to the car right in front of you in that case.

Depends on what you consider "productive contributors to society." Did you read the various charges against the dad?

I drive that stretch at least 3 times a week and the construction definately slows down the rate of speed, especially east bound during the afternoon. A lot of the time, it has been bumper to bumper. Someone would have seen something in my opinion.
