It still happens that you may not get the closest call center, but theyve streamlined the process where as long as you know where you are (your home address) they will transfer you directly to the nearest call center. Havent had a landline since 2004 and probably will never need one.

All I have is a landline. Well, we have a burner that we take on trips, but other than that, if I'm not home, I'm not getting phone calls.

Vivint offers the same, and you can control your security system and home thermostat from your smartphone too (others may offer this feature, I don't know).
Haven't had a landline in about 7 years or so, don't really miss it or see a need to ever bring it back.
