Re: 10yr old fights off kidnapper
Good to see that that girl or her brother were not injured or abducted. Pretty sick people out there.
I taught martial arts, Krav Maga, and self defense for 14 years and when I trained a student...from 5 yrs old on up, the first thing I would tell them to do was to scream, yell, kick, punch, or basically make a fool out of themselves to get the attention needed to stay out of harm's way.
The first test I gave to the students when their parents were around, basically to see how the parents would react, was to have another instructor or friends attack them (playfully) and see what they would yell. About 90% of them would yell 'help' or 'leave me alone' while 10% didn't say or do anything. This is all while the parents were talking amongst one another, texting, or reading a book, they simply ignored the cries for help because of what I called the 'playground effect' of kids yelling 'help' when they were playing in a playful/harmless way. I would then teach them to yell 'fire' or 'you're not my parent' to see what would happen and the parents instantly took notice.
Funny how some words worked differently than others.

I don’t care where you come from, whether it’s Texas, Florida, California, or right here in the state of Iowa, I don’t care about any of that… But what I did care about is moving forward from that day on, that we were one team." -Paul Rhoads -

My 8 year old grand daughter has a pretty good instinct about this as well even though she lives in San Diego, CA, when she's home she does nothing but ask questions about self defense.
Always looking for new ways to help people protect themselves and their loved ones.

I believe the 'would be' abductor turned himself in to police yesterday.
