Best (reasonably-priced) golf course in the area

Hey there Fanatics,

I'm somewhat new to the area and I'm looking for some advice on decent, reasonably-priced golf courses in the Ames-DM area. I'm not, by any means, a good golfer (as most of us can relate), just looking to get out and shoot a few rounds at courses in the area.

Ideally, less than $35 or so for a round (walking). I'm a poor student. What can I say?

I've played Veenker and Homewood in Ames. Any thoughts?

Toad valley on the east side of dsm gas a deal after 6. 1st player is 17.50 and 7.50 for each one after. 4 some can play for 40.

You should be able to play anywhere in the DM Metro (with one or 2 exceptions) for $35 walking, even on weekends. Most places in DM are $35-$50 for 18 and a cart on the weekends with TCI and Harvester being more expensive.

Legacy in Norwalk has a really good deal after 2pm on the weekends.

Honey Creek in Boone is a great course and really cheap to walk if you're looking for one closer to Ames.

Both Honey Creek and Cedar Pointe in Boone are cheap(er) to walk. Go to Honey Creek on Monday or Friday and it's $20 or less for 18 and a cart.

If you suck like I do, bring plenty of balls for the back nine. You won't see too many more beautiful nine holes of golf in Iowa.

I second Legacy. For years, it's been the best value around. Haven't played it yet his year, but that will change in a couple of weeks.

Also agree with Honey Creek. They have some incredible deals. The back 9 could be a difficult walk, but the scenic beauty should push you through. I imagine it's pretty damn hot down there too.

Why wait until the back 9? Once you finish 1 and 2 it gets pretty easy to lose balls because there are trees immediately.

And I can't imagine there are many par 3s more fun than 11 at Honey Creek. Hitting the tips is awesome.

#11 at Honey Creek is really cool. Nothing like hitting 9 iron from 195.

$12 for 9 holes with cart at Colo (Weekdays), that's the cheapest deal I know of around Ames.

I'd call around to see what their specials are. Both courses I've been to lately have specials going, one (Deer Run- Indianola) has 18 holes w/cart for something like $29 and another (Shady Oaks- Ackworth) has a morning special for around that, so I would assume that a lot of courses are offering something.

Legacy in Norwalk is definitely worth playing, and I've had a number of people mention that Countryside in Norwalk has some great rates too (and very few trees).

If you are going to play in that area, golf at Copper Creek or Terrace Hills. Both are much better Value than Toad (which is kind of a dump of a golf course).

Very few trees can be a blessing or a nightmare. Sometimes I need those trees to knock down errant shots before they can go into the wrong fairway.
