I dont begrudge her for making money doing these things while she can. She's apparently in demand, and that will fade over time, so make money now. Now do i begrudge the media that incessantly tries to create more of that demand? Absolutely.

and what would I have rooted for harrison barnes in before college? I have absolutely no reason to pay attention to HS basketball. yes i graduated from ISU, but that doesn't mean Ames high school winning or losing means jack **** to me.
Completely agreed with this. I had zero reason to care about HB aside from him being a potential recruit. Once he said he was going elsewhere i again had zero reason to care. I never get the whole 'someone is from iowa so we all have to support them' thing. That goes for HB and it goes for the hawks as well (it is not 'great for everyone' when the hawks are winning)

I'm looking forward to a 40 year old, pregnant, shawn johnson doing handstands in the produce section of the johnston hyvee asking passers by if they'd like an autographed cantaloup.

so your saying you didn't give a crap about one of ISU's biggest potential recruits who worked out at ISU facilities with current ISU players and was in the local media on a daily basis. I get that not everyone follows current recruits but if you lived in central Iowa it was pretty hard not to know what Barnes was having for lunch that day. So I assume you shared a similar distaste for him as the others you mentioned.

I did not care about his HS basketball career or Ames HS. obviously I was aware that HB was on ISU's radar as far as recruiting goes. the fact that he had some ties to ISU doesn't mean that hearing about every time he did any little thing was any more tolerable.

and now that he'll be on the news every night he plays a few minutes in the league will be even more irritating.

having someone jammed down your throat ad nauseam by the local media (like shawn, zach, lolo, etc.) kinda makes it hard to root for or support that person IMO.

then factor in that she's pretty stuck up, is a hawk fan, and isn't even relevant in her own sport anymore, and i think it's fair to not want to have to listen to her as an olympic correspondent.

just because she is from iowa doesn't mean we all, as iowan's, must like her and everything she does.
Thank you for the support - I think you said it better than I did! Dont hate Shawn - just dont appreciate canned celebrity - trying to keep the money and fame going long past her time in athletics.

And I have to admit - today is a big Oops for me - I like Lolo Jones, and whoops, Lolo is in trouble for that tweet. Well, so I guess I'm back to Michelle Kwan - still a fan of Michelle!

I wish Shawn well, in her future - go back to school, make new plans for the future, new achievements in a different arena. She has her whole life ahead of her, with the possibility of higher quality achievements. Try to make good choices, better than TV shows.
