My family eats in our cars. We live 8+ hours from our family, so to not do so is simply inconvenient.
However, when I buy my toy car several years from now (right now it's going to be a Mustang Shelby GT 500, year TBD), outside of snack type foods and beverages, eating will not happen in this car. And it won't be driven when there is salt on the road.
Whenever my parents would get a new car they'd enforce the no food rule for a couple of months but it'd fade away pretty quickly. Their children are 19 and older though so there isn't the messy kid issue.
When I was old enough to need my own vehicle my dad got a new truck and gave me his old one. So being as it wasn't really mine or brand new I didn't care about food. I still have that truck for my trips to school, so when I need to get a drive through, I usually have the girlfriend prepare the food for me so I don't make a mess while driving. (Even in the car she knows her roll ;).)
I do and that is why I don't understand people not eating in their car. How do you get your kids to sit in a car for hours without snacks? Also, who really wants to stop for an hour so everyone can go in and eat? Last, if you have kids your car is probably trashed as it is. Maybe it is because I live in the middle of nowhere, but this would just be more headaches than its worth. I just clean my car on a regular basis and try to keep out foods and drinks that stain.
Honestly the food never seems to be as much of a problem compared to drinks anyway and it seems like most people who have the no food policy still allow drinks.
