Since replacing my power supply didn't eliminate my blue screen problems, the next likely culprit appears to be my video card (this thing has crashed since I had it built two years ago).
What would be the best video card in the $130 to $180 range for gaming? I don't play particularly high graphic games- more along the lines of Civ V and other strategy games. Right now, I can't seem to get through more than 30 minutes of Civ without a crash.
a raedon 6870 is most likely the best card in that price range. I use one and can play any game on max settings. Can find them on sale for sub $150 at times.
4 GB of RAM......my case also has two built-in fans and tons of ventilation. It doesn't seem to matter how large of a map, or how far into a game I am when it crashes. Sometimes I can be just starting out with two units, or into the 20th century with 100. Also crashes randomly while just sitting there, or sometimes when you go to play a youtube video.
Yeah, I'm not doing that again. From what I'm reading, the most frequent locale of the error is associated with the video card, so I'll probably upgrade that and add RAM too.
That'll put me one motherboard away from replacing everything in it.
I used to blue screen all the time when I had 4gig, but I threw in some more to up it to 6 and its never crashed since. Doesn't mean its your problem, but it was certainly mine. Didn't have the problem with old XP, but Win7 eats up more obviously.
