I did mess with him one time before he could read. We were watching a Georgetown bball game and he asked me who was playing. I told him and then he asked me who they were playing and I told him the Hoyas. He said he would root for the Hoyas because I was rooting for Georgetown. The entire game he was rooting for the Hoyas with out knowing. Sadly that won't work anymore.
Luckily he isn't a Cards fan but his grandpa and Uncle are Sox fans so it's not much of a trade off.
Take him to a basketball game at Hilton and stick around to say hi to the players after the game. Getting to meet someone "famous" is cool and almost instantly makes them a part fan... Especially if they get personal

I am a Bears-Blackhawks-Twins fan because of my dad.
My dad was born and raised in South Dakota. I have lived in Iowa since I was 18 months old. So, while he is not the reason I'm a Cyclone (he's a South Dakota State alum), we agree state agriculture schools are far superior to any other schools.
I trained my kids when they were 5 & 3 to tell people whenever they seen them wearing a hawkeye shirt to tell them - "hawkeyes suck". They still do it over a year later, and my 4 year old daughter doesn't want anything to do with the colors black and yellow if they are close together. Hopefully its not to late for your boy. Don't buy him anything but cyclone gear. wear it or go without!! jk. good luck!
Winning means you're willing to go longer, work harder, and give more than anyone else.

I think you should keep the focus on individuals. As he starts cheering for individuals that he knows and looks up to, he will naturally become a fan of their team.
I would be careful of using the "teach him to say Hawkeye Sucks" approach. Getting beat up early for being a Cyclones fan may toughen him up, but it also might break him.
The positive experience of the depth of what it means to be a Cyclone fan will be undeniable for him. But you may have to give him consistent experiences. Give him a great time for every Cyclone event you can.

I do not know but I will put this out there. Sounds like he is doing it to get you to pay more attention to him. Pay more attention to him doing Cyclone things together.
Fan fest is coming up. That would be a good place to start by shooting hoops with him in Hilton with some of the basketball players.
Take your kids to cyclone activities when they're young and it won't even be an issue. If you don't do this at your own damn fault. My daughter has autographs of all the Basketball players and as you can see the picture with Royce (among others). If someone bought her Hawkeye poster she'd use it for toilet paper without my prompting.
