The driver is the most overrated, over marketed, and over practiced club in the bag. You'll hit it 14 times a round, max.
Get a 4-wood, fairways and greens, and show your buddies your scorecard next time they give you a hard time about not hitting driver and how you beat them by 10 strokes.
I'm one of those boring, easy swinging, straight but not the longest type of golfers. My buddies drive it 280 in the rough while I'm content at 260 in the fairway. I shoot in the 70's and they are in the 80's and 90's.
Get good at your 100-yard and under game and watch your handicap drop like crazy.
Nothing more frustrating than laying up off the tee box and messing it up. You think, "well crap if I was going to hit it OB I might as well have done it with my driver."
Realistically though it depends on the golfer. I'm more accurate off the tee with my driver than 3 wood on most days.
better golf strategy, hit a provisional every time you miss the green on a par 3, just in case you hit it in. Word!
WWJD (What Would Jack Do)
I have to get back to Ames to play Veenker again. Must be 10 yrs since I've played it.
As to hitting driver, hit whatever club you think gives you the best shot to get home in par. My home course now has a 510 yd par that I always hit two 19 deg hybrids to set up a wedge in. Driver brings too many penalties into play.
Depends on the hole and how good you are. If the hole is 640 yards, you need to hit the driver just to have a chance to get there in regulation.
I prefer to have a wedge in my hands for my third shot, so i will typically hit my driver and then whatever iron it takes to get me within 80-110 yards of the green.
Short game is whats important. Play a round with a six iron, wedge, and putter. I think you will be surprised with how you do. Assuming you can hit a iron.
I agree short game is where it's at. Gotta learn to putt and use your wedges.
In Voke I Trust.... :-)
I've got a driver that's shifted 1.5 degrees to fix my draw... hit em straight everytime... now my 3w is a different story :(
If I'm struggling with my driver I'll hit a hybrid or an iron off the tee without a second thought. I'm a wiley old mutha...shut your mouth.
Strokes are made on and around the greens.
... I was watching a Fuzzy Zoeller segment on the Golf Channel... he said "JUST DO WHAT FEELS GOOD".... and screw any coach that tells you different.
I miss golfing homewood
