$100 in home improvement that's going to last for many years is a steal. It's not much money at all when you do a cost/benefit analysis. Could just be you're cheap.

The mis-tints at Menards are $5/gal. They usually will have the common beige brown type colors and the odd purple and pinks.

I painted over some pretty funky colors when I moved in with just the generic store brand from Lowes/Home Depot and it was somewhere around $20. One coat plus a quick second and it was fine.

We just painted over our kitchen that was that dark "County Blue" with an eggshell/pearl color. Because the wife is impatient she insisted on picking it up herself while she was out rather than when I was going out the next day.

Well, you can probably tell where this went. Nearly $40/gal nice paint+primer in one crap. And that is exactly what it was...crap. I couldn't tell any difference in the stuff from any other paint I ever used.

You'll be just fine with the generic stuff...even if you need one extra quick coat to fill in some speckles, it's not worth doubling the price to get out of it.

It's Titanium Dioxide. About 1/3 of the cost of a can of paint for the manufacturer is Titanium Dioxide. Prices have skyrocketed since 2010. Also the other stuff like Polypropolyene and other resins are up with oil.

Good news is TIO2 is now leveling off and may even start declining. Some of the other raw materials have cooled off a little as well. However I doubt prices for paint comes down much. Sherwin Williams raises prices when raws go up, and then they don't give much price back. Check out a stock chart of ticker SHW.

Exactly what the oil industry does. Some sheik in the middle east has a cranky week and futures go up 20 cents. Abdullah cools off and prices only retreat 5 cents. Cozy 15 cent gain over nothing. Everybody wins but you and me. We just keep getting ****ed in the ***.
