Paint prices!!
Yeah, strange thread subject, I know. But I have to vent.
We're painting a bedroom, in anticipation of a new family member this winter. I've stayed out of the design details, leaving that up to my wife. We like Behr products, so I went to Home Depot to pick up the paint that she wanted for the room, only to crap myself after seeing the total for 3 gallons of paint.
I've done a fair amount of painting in the past several years, but I must have blacked out during the time when paint skyrocketed past $20 per gallon. As far as I know there aren't gold flakes in this stuff I bought today, but it cost me $34 per gallon!
What the hell am I missing?! I never expected a 3-gallon purchase to surpass the century mark!! -
Re: Paint prices!!
Are you buying the expensive designer brands? We stick with the generic stuff and it's usually around $18/gallon, I think.

Re: Paint prices!!
I've never really researched it, but it probably has a lot to do with the higher costs incurred while meeting all of the EPA standards.

3 gallons of paint for one bedroom? Do you live in a castle?

Re: Paint prices!!
A little steep. Did you get the primer/paint combo? Either way, I use nothing but Behr. I've used other brands and the coverage sucks. Behr is the way to go.
I do agree with the other guy though, 3 gallons for a single bedroom seems like overkill.

Tell me about it. I just painted my house and it took 25 gallons. It was over $700 for the paint alone.

No, but we're using two colors that are fairly dark on top of a very light color, so we're anticipating 2-3 coats. Fair enough. I've always used Sherwin Williams as I'm able to get discounts through a fam member. Got our house over a year ago and it ran us about $250 for 10 gallons, and that was with the discount. Planning on re painting the bathroom tomorrow now that I can open the windows and allow the smell to escape.

Re: Paint prices!!
Ugh. I just bought a house and it has a perfect man cave in the basement. Problem is one wall is orange. I planned on painting it gold, but Jesus. Not at these prices.

Re: Paint prices!!
A lot of paint colors are made in the Japan area and after the tsunami last year, prices might have increased.
I know when we went car shopping and were looking at Jeeps, I noticed some of the colors were a little off from normal/looked different. The car salesman reiterated what I had thought about the paint colors and after the tsunami, they had to be made somewhere else (Italy?).

I usually like to buy the best I can afford also. That said, I've used the Wal Mart store brand for interiors and I've been very satisfied with it. IIRC, I decided to give it a shot after reading a Consumer Reports article that rated it a best buy.
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. -
Re: Paint prices!!
I don't spend much on interior paint for a kid's room. They like to change colors every few years anyway so I don't need top shelf paint. I usually look for a sale/rebate at Menards and get something in the low 20s/gal.

I was also surprised to see how much a gallon costs. Make sure and store any leftover latex where it will not freeze at these prices.
