Re: Where do you plan to retire?
Not sure, after I lose my federal retirement pension when the government goes broken I’ll probably sell my cars and burn my house down for the insurance money. Than I’ll look for a place with a decent climate and go there and live in an empty refrigerator box, probably behind the dumpster at the private community center of some fancy retirement village. That’s as far as my planning has gone. I was eligible to retire in 2010 but hanging on because I don't yet want to sell my cars or burn my house down! -

Im thinking of buying a condo in south mizzou or northern arkansas....If I dont do that we will leave Iowa for a few weeks every winter.
Just proves that GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Where do you plan to retire?
For those of you chasing your children around, you better make sure they (and their spouse) want that. I know if my in laws moved closer, it would be a problem.

That being said, I always thought I would head west again (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana) when retirement time comes around but I find that I really like it here.
There's not enough money in the world to get me to move back to Iowa, or anywhere in the Midwest ever again. I lived the first 22 years of my life in Iowa, plus a 3-year stint in Illinois. That was about 20 years too many for me.

OK, I've never been to Arkansas, but I'm struggling (stereotype wise) thinking of how one could hate Iowa/Midwest and love Arkansas, other than warmer winters.

Re: Where do you plan to retire?
We go to Mexico and the Caribbean for one week at a time in Jan. & Feb. to get out of Iowa's Winterwonderland. We tried two weeks one time and I was stir crazy by the 9th day. We seldom go back to the same places and enjoy seeing new things/cusine etc. I do not ever plan on buying a permanent retirement home, as long as we can move around. 90 degrees and a beach are the goals and we can not get that in the US although the Florida Keys are not bad and I would recommend Key West to anyone for a Winter get-a-way.

Re: Where do you plan to retire?
I can see moving from eastern Iowa as the Hawkeye population is becoming more replusive everyday! Anyway, I love the Des Moines-Ankeny-Ames area, so as long as the winters don't get too difficult to navigate, I'll stay close to the middle of the state and my kids and grandkids!

We actually have nature here instead of an endless sea of corn and soybean fields. The warmer winters are also a plus (I saw less than an inch of snow last year).
The northwest corner of Arkansas is just as normal as anywhere else. The stereotypes apply to some parts of the state, but we're fairly isolated from that up here.

Spent some time around the Memphis / NE Ark area and it's actually pretty scenic
