    Fractured Patella (kneecap)

I'm curious if anyone here either knows of anyone that has done this before, or has done it themselves. I went to Knotfest in Somerset, WI on Saturday, and ended up crashing down onto the concrete with my patella taking all of the blow. I bumped it lightly earlier this evening, and ending up going down for the count when that happened. My knee is extremely swollen (looks like a cross between a baseball and a golf ball has been lodged under the skin), and I can't straighten my leg very well because of the pain. I would really hate going to the doctor, especially the ER, if it just ends up being a bad bruise. It's not horribly misshapen, but it does look way more "pointed" than my other knee. I'm not sure if it's broken or not, so I was wondering if that seems to coincide with anyone that has busted their knee before or not.

Knucklehead, go to the doctor. You want your legs to work, it's kind of important.

I have never taken one medical class, but I'm gonna have to agree with Fitzy on this one.

A chainsaw should take care of that leg.

If it were something unimportant, like an arm, I'd say rub some dirt on it.

    Re: Fractured Patella (kneecap)

I broke my knee cap sophomore year college and it hurt like heck. I injured it on a Friday night after the bars and the following morning it was swollen like no other and I could barely put any pressure on it. Partied again Saturday night (which I paid for on Sunday) and went to urgent care first thing Monday morning. They took x-rays but said I just had a bad bruise, however, when they took the x-ray they never took one from the top down.

It hurt for several months and I tried to ignore the pain and go about my daily routine until I finally ended up going back to the doctor. They took x-rays again and this time they took a top down view and right away the doctor lets out a "hmmm" that's interesting as I see a big line down the middle of my knee cap. He says, "you broke it". I'm like what the heck as for months I was led to believe it was just a bruise.

I was then referred for an MRI which turned out negative for any torn ligaments, etc but essentially stayed off the knee for like 3 months to allow the knee to heal. After going through it, I've learned there is not a lot you can do for a broken knee cap except rest and ice to keep the swelling down so the knee can heal. I think I have some scar tissue in the knee as it still bothers me from time to time but not much a guy can do for it.

Good luck with it and I would definitely recommend going to the doctor to know for sure as had I known from the start I had actually broken my knee cap I would have taken it easy from the start.

I had something like this happen to me at the Knoxville ER. I went in because I thought I broke my hand back in 7th grade. They took some x-rays and they came back negative. The doctor told me it was going to be swollen for a while because I did quite a bit of damage to the blood vessels in my hand, but there was no sign of broken or fractured bones. I ended up going back just under 2 months later because I got really sick with the flu and went the doctor came in he looked over my files and asked me why I wasn't wearing my cast. He pulled out the same x-ray they took in the ER and showed me that I broke all of fingers.

If it were me, I'd cut it open to see, and then sew it back up Rambo-style.

I'm going to have to go to the doctor tomorrow. I could barely even press the brake in my car this afternoon without wanting to scream in pain.
