I like the idea of having access to the internet through Wi Fi with one of these, but not having to pay a monthly data charge to a phone company.

iPod Touch unless something has changed wouldn't have a phone charge. Only accessible via wifi.
I've had mine for couple years, I'm pretty happy with it.
And I'll start the Apple vs Android argument. The Samsung Galaxy Wifi is pretty nice. The biggest difference is that it has a 5" screen. But it really depends on whether you really want to transfer via itunes or are willing to use other programs.
I'm still a Blackberry user (i just love the physical keyboard), and I use my iPod Touch everyday (a lot). It sucks to always have to carry both devices, but I just deal with it. The apple apps are easier to use than the blackberry internet and BB apps. A lot of bars and restaurants have free wi-fi for their customers, so I can use it just about anywhere.
I think you'll love the iPod touch, but you should wait a month, they usually refresh/update the iPods in the fall if I recall correctly.
get the screen protector
Love my 64GB ipod touch, had it for a couple years now with no problems. I would recommend it.
I absolutely loved mine. I had a 16gb for a few years before my car window got bashed in and it was stolen at the 5th & Walnut garage downtown.
I've had my 16gb a couple of years and really like it - except that I'm maxed out. I'll get a 64gb this fall. Good battery life. Love my podcasts and audiobooks and tunes. And hey, I've really improved my Tetris skills of old.
Get a Nexus 7 :jimlad: but in reality touches are cool, but if you're set on a touch, wait until next month or so for the refresh.
Love my 32 gig. I've had it for quite a few years now. Other than when you are on the road, it seems you can get wifi just about anywhere, so looking up info/getting email is still pretty easy. I don't know how durable they are though, mine has taken two falls without issue, both onto a tile floor, but I think I got lucky, one put a tiny dent in the back, the other mushed the metal around the volum up/down buttons, but no screen damage. Actually has held up pretty well considering i've used it just about every day for the last 3 years or so. If you aren't going smartphone, it's definitely the next best thing.
I also love mine, got it before I had a smartphone and it worked great. The only downfall of it is that the headphone connector is starting to go out but it is around five years old now.
