Re: Have you or would you...
I was once on the other side of the equation. I was driving north on 380 from the city to the east that is best not named (where I attended law school) headed to a job interview. My car broke down. It was raining. I managed to get out of my suit in the car and into an old tshirt and shorts. A guy in a beat up old car stopped and offered me a ride to the next town.
I accepted. In conversation I mentioned that I was heading to a job interview and was a law student. He then started asking for legal advice because he was a felon who was concerned his parole was going to be revoked. Eep.

Re: Have you or would you...
One evening I was driving up I35 just south of Ames and came across a broken down vehicle. I pulled over. His wife said he had been trying to flag someone down for about 30 minutes. They knew what the problem was but needed a flashlight so they could see to fix it.
I didn't have one so I drove him to the Ames truck stop and got one. As we just got back the HP was pulling up behind the vehicle. Once the car was running I followed them back to the truck stop. He offered me a few bucks for gas but I refused.
I hitchhiked quite a bit back in the 70's early 80's. Got picked up by some real weirdos.
I've picked up one or 2 but that was a long time ago. I rarely see anyone hitching anymore.

LOL. And this is why I would be terrified to hitchhike.

Re: Have you or would you...
I've hitchhiked a few times and would probably pick up a hitchhiker if ever in the situation. You just don't see them that often.

I've helped out three times.
First one the car behind me spun out on ice and went in the ditch on a lightly traveled county road in southern Iowa. Gave the couple and their kid a ride to Des Moines. They offered money, I declined.
The other two were both people who had cars that were out of gas. Both on I35. Both I helped give rides to a gas station. One I gave a ride back the other got help from friends at the town. ok, when I think of hitchhiker, I'm thinking of backpacks, dirty clothes, scruffy facial hair (so probably a man, lol), and kind of skeezy looking. If it's something like a fellow female with a flat tire or car troubles........I'd like to think I'd stop to help or at least pull over and wait for police or someone to arrive and help. That's a stranded motorist, not a hitchhiker, to me at least.

I dont know if I would. Maybe if it was a short distance and I had a truck that they could sit in back separate from me.

I prefer the term "fun-sized".

I picked up a hitchhiker once and he gave me the idea that made me my first million, 6 Minute Abs.
