One of my friends GF's did that for a couple years, it was the most fascinating 1.5hour conversation I've ever had. See said it was cool for the first couple months, then got old quick. Apparently she was on a train once in Montana that they just stopped in the middle of nowhere, unhooked all of the cars, and took off. She said that was a 30 mile walk back to the nearest town.

Re: Have you or would you...
I have back when I was younger. Today with as much responsibility as I have I don't and certainly wouldn't with family in the car. Stopping to help someone in distress is another story. I have and will continue to do this. Especially women and the elderly.

Re: Have you or would you...
I got in a situation where I needed a ride, so about 3 months later I see a kid walking on the side of the road and figured it's my turn. It's 10pm at night, just got done playing softball, and have to work in the am. I pick him up ask him what he needs and get the story, barely. He just got fired that day, is totally wasted, and is hitchhiking to meet his parents halfway so he can get home.
I tell him I can get him to a little town by the state line, which is about 40 minutes round trip out of my way. He calls his parents on my cell and we agree on an intersection. We get down there and no parents. I ask him to call again, but it's a crappy cell area and no service. There's a little bar that I ask if their car is in the lot, he say's no. I ask him to go in and check, he won't because I might leave him. I hadn't thought about that yet, but not a bad idea. So after he starts crying, 18 year old - drunk - out of work, I agree to run him to the next town in New Mexico and we call again. Straight to voicemail.
So we sit there and keep trying to call until about 12:30, at which point I just kick him out at a gas station with a couple bucks and tell him I'll keep calling mom and dad until they answer so they know he's past them. More tears.
So I get home at about 1:30am and call mom and dad. They just left the bar we passed several hours ago because of last call.
So I'm all square with the hitchhiker gods for a while.

Re: Have you or would you...
Ive done this a few times. 1 was seeing a guy walking covered in blood drove him to the hospital. He was illeagle and wrecked his truck. Not a word of english. Another was a girl on the exit for my hometown. Pulled up and she freaked out and im like ill drive you to the little town so u can get a tow. She got in drove to the town the placed was closed so i just sped off and left her. (gas station a few blocks away so wasnt to worried). Another was a girl waking to her bf place in college and it was raining. Flagged me down and asked for ride. She said shed provide services for the trouble. I lold.

Re: Have you or would you...
I pick them up. I love the excitement of it. Will they try something or not. I always carry Besse with me. It is a colt 44-40. Nice friend to have in trouble. One shot and they generally run from the noice. If you believe this I got to meet you.

Re: Have you or would you...
My family (my parents, my 2 sisters and myself) picked up a middle age couple that were hiking in Shenandoah National Park on Skyline Drive. They were just hiking back to there car a few miles down the road, but were looking for a ride there if they could get one. They were nice and recommended a couple hikes that we hadn't thought about doing. And those hikes ended up being my favorite of trip.

Re: Have you or would you...
My gf went to visit her cousin in the DC area a few years ago. When he picked her up at the airport there was some guy sitting in the backseat. They dropped him off a few miles later and she asked what just happened. They have regular stops where you can pick someone up and then drive in the carpool lane (SNAIL lane) and drop them off at another stop. Basically legal hitchhiking.
